Luna Lovegood was never one to have many friends…Funny that a muggle object would be what kept them close…

Prompt: telephone

Disclaimer: There would be a lot more writing about Harry Potter out if I were Jo…

Luna Lovegood was never one to have many friends. Since a young age, she believed in mythical creatures that even most wizards thought were made-up and so other young children would make fun of her and stay away. Although her father was especially sad to see his daughter spending most of her days wither with him or on her own, he didn't want to lie to her and say that what the others said was true, and so they continued living mostly as though they were the only people in the world.

And then she went off to Hogwarts. There she encountered the same problems she had as a little girl, except now the other kids were meaner, giving her the nickname "Loony Lovegood". The first girl who was even remotely nice to her was a certain young redhead, who seemed not to care about what all the others said. Ginny Weasley soon became Luna's one and only friend at Hogwarts, and the latter found that having friends could actually be a good thing.

In her fourth year she joined Dumbledore's Army and created more friendships, such as those with Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley and Neville Longbottom. She had never complained that she didn't have many friends, and every single one she did have was so closely cherished that she painted them onto her bedroom ceiling.

Funny that a muggle object would be what kept them close after the war. It had been Hermione's idea that they all get muggle cell phones to communicate, saying that it would be easier to get a hold of each other in case they couldn't floo or didn't know where they were. She set them all up with their individual numbers and taught them how to use their new technology, and surprisingly, the telephones really did come in handy.

Luna, who lived with her father but travelled around a lot, received at least one call every week from one of the five, to her father's joyous surprise. Whether it was just to chat and catch up or to inquire about something or other, she could expect to hear from either Harry, Ginny, Ron, Hermione or Neville; the highlight of her week.

The telephone would become the way she and Ginny organized the coffee dates when they asked each to be their bridesmaid, how they all found out what new creatures Luna had been studying and where to send their Christmas gifts for her, and how Ginny found out that at last Luna was pregnant – with twins!

Indeed, even being an object of no use to many other witches and wizards, Luna would later admit that the telephone was what kept her close to her friends while she was all over the world, and they in turn would treasure her as much as she did them.
