Chapter 1
Caine:
"Everyone's attention please" Diana shouted over the noise of the Coates Academy students. A couple of the kids quieted but most kept talking, "Everyone be quiet" she shouted, obviously frustrated no one was listening. Then Drake entered, every student shut up when they saw his face, he was mad. Drake always was cross about something but today he looked more angry than usual.
"As you all know, everyone over the age of 14 has disappeared" I began "And we assume the same has happened down in Perdido Beach"-
"How do you know"? A kid named Noah called out. Drake silenced him with a glare.
"As I was saying" I continued "We assume the same has happened in Perdido Beach and there is a wall keeping us trapped here with them. We, in a few days of careful practice will go down to Perdido Beach and we will make an impression". I signalled Diana with a slow blink, and she tossed her glossy dark hair over her shoulder and walked to the front of the room next to me.
"We need to be organised, therefore Caine, Drake and I are in charge. No questions asked." She said in her beautiful, cold voice "After this explanation everyone will go back to their classroom: Kate, Joseph, Camille, Freya, George, Brianna and Owen are in charge of their class, Drake will be patrolling the corridors".
Looking at the back row I asked "Can anyone in here drive?" There turned out to be 13 kids in total of varying abilities. "You thirteen need to stay behind, when the rest of you get back to your classroom you must be silent or Drake will teaching you a little lesson he came up with" Drake cracked his knuckles sharply. Almost every kid looked terrified now. And soon after they could see what I can do, they all would.
Diana
Caine told me to read every one of them on the way out, about a hundred kids in total. Some had the power some didn't, but I had to show no emotion (says Caine) as I marked their power or otherwise on the register. The confident ones knew they had the power and had three bars whereas the shy ones didn't know and had no power or one bar. Not that it mattered to Caine unless they could actually use their powers. I hated the way I would do anything for Caine he was my whole life, I hated it but you were with Caine or you were against him.
That was the way it was at Coates, the wimps didn't last long Caine hated them, so their grades failed and either begged to leave or got kicked out. Nurse Temple, was the one person I didn't want to rid of she had just the tiniest more control over Caine than anyone else. I've never understood why but she does. All the three bars I knew. Harriet, Brianna, Josh, Mikey, Daniel and Sarah. They passed and then someone I had never bothered to read was four bars. That was bad. "Name?" I asked.
"Marina Brown"
"What can you do" I whispered.
"Do I have the power?"
I looked into her dark eyes and said "yes".
