After the calm after the storm, I did a short story called helpless in which Clark wanted to tell Lois about her father but there were too many people calling for his help, so he had to watch, helplessly, while she went with the military men and received the news of her Father. This is the story that picks up after that one.

A Warring Heart

Clark helped as many people in Metropolis and Smallville as he could. For now things seemed to calm down a bit, at least in everyone else's life. But not in his. And not in Lois'. He ran around Metropolis and Smallville trying to find her, after he called her over 8 times. He knew that while he just spent time repairing the world, and helping those in it, Lois's world came crashing down.

He was running so fast that he was actually winded. He stopped for a minute on a dirt road outside Smallville and he tried to call her again… and once again no answer.

"Lois, where are you?!" Clark whispered angrily. His heart was pounding and his lungs were aching, not just from the running. After a couple more times of running around, Clark realized he needed to go home to feed Shelby. As he approached the Kent Farm, he saw her and he became relieved to at least have found her.

She was just staring blankly out the Kent Barn window, looking at the world around her but not seeing it.

He entered the barn and approached her cautiously. He cursed the dusty, wooden stairs for creaking so loudly. He wanted to comfort her but he also didn't want to destroy the world she surely placed herself in, in defense against what just happened to her Father.

"Lois?!" Clark said quietly, soothingly, questioningly.

She flinched at the mention of her name but she turned around and acknowledged him.

She said nothing.

But she didn't have to. One look into her eyes and Clark knew that Lois was trapped in her warring heart.

One side was angry, livid, hysterical, pissed off, disheartened, broken, worn and heartbroken.

The other side was relieved at seeing him. A little vein of warmth spread through her cold heart when she knew that he was finally there. This side felt love. This side felt safe, okay, strong, at ease, grateful and thankful. This side felt hope. This side felt not alone.

But what side of her heart would win?
