Chapter One :
Donna was close to her breaking point. Everybody knew that she was heading that way but had no idea on how to help her. All of the SRU reached out to her, but nothing they said or did had any effect. Hank, her husband, was trying to be there for her, too, but she was pushing him away. She was really angry and moody. She had been through so much loss with losing three of her teammates—losses that she witnessed—and a miscarriage. Only a few people knew about the baby: Hank, Ed Lane, and Jimmy, her team mate, were the only ones.
Two weeks before the bombing that took his life, Jimmy cornered Donna and asked her if she was pregnant. Donna admitted she was but asked him not to say anything. Jimmy wasn't happy about keeping quiet, but said nothing till the bombing. That fateful day when the bomb call came in, Jimmy had said to her, "Why don't I take Marcus and Tony with me?" Donna had said, "Copy that" knowing full well what Jimmy was doing.
It was while Donna was waiting for information about the bomb that Sergeant Parker realized it was a trick and yelled for the Team Three members to get out of the building. Donna was also yelling for her three team members, but sadly, it was too late. After the bomb went off, Donna was yelling for their status but got no answer. She knew in her heart they were gone, but she and Greg nevertheless ran inside to see if they were alive. Marcus and Tony were gone, but Jimmy was found to have a slow pulse. Donna immediately started CPR, hoping to beat back Death. Steve, the paramedic, finally arrived and took over the chest compressions. He tried to get Jimmy's heart beating again; tried to get him breathing. He worked on him for fifteen minutes, but he knew there was no way Jimmy was going to live. Looking at Donna with sadness and regret, Steve finally said, "I am sorry. I'm calling it. There is no more I can do."
Donna held Jimmy's hand as he was pronounced dead. It was all so wrong. How could Steve have stopped trying? How could he have given up on Jimmy like that? He'd given up, and now a good man was dead. Rage boiled up inside Donna, rage that found its release in words of hot anger against Steve. "I hate you!" she yelled at the paramedic. Sergeant Parker tried to hold her, but she pulled away and walked off to calm down a little. But deep inside, she knew it was not over by a long shot.
