All around Kenshin men fell, his hands moved as if they had a mind of their own. He swung left then right his sword striking the mettle of his enemy's armor, he squinted as sparks flew from the contact. He jumped back taking a good look at his new opponent. Kenshin bent at the knee his hand on his hilt; he dashed forward drawing his sword and hitting the man in the back of the neck making him fall forward. Kenshin turned to walk away his eyes wide as he herd the sound of a sword being drawn.
Kenshin cried out in anguish as a sword entered his back, he turned quickly to face a pail man with a smirk and his face covered in blood, my blood, Kenshin thought. He tried with his whole being not to fall at the feet of his enemy, but to no avail he fell, a cloud of dust clouded his vision as the man walked away setting fire to everything that dared to cross his path. Kenshin brought his hands under his chest and with a grunt of pain tried to raise himself off the ground. As soon as the top of his chest left the ground his face was back in the dirt. He reached around trying to remove the sword from his back; normally he would have been able to reach the sword. But in his weakened state he was barley able to lift his head.
He gagged as the smell of burning flesh invaded his senses. He tried again to stand at he felt the heat of the flames inching closer.
I can't die like this! He thought. How would Kaoru take this? I need to get back!
He tried again forcing his upper body off the ground he got to his feet pain surged through his body the flames consuming the town behind him. Every step he took drained his energy every move he made the wound in his back grew larger and more and more blood drained out staining the dirt blood red. He started moving slower the pain overtaking his body. He fell to the ground his foot caught in a tangle of long grass he lay there for the second time that day his eyes growing hazy from loss of blood. He reached up again trying to remove the sword lodged deep within his back, but as before his efforts were in vain. The blood ran out his back staining his clothes a dark red. Slowly the flames engulfed the meadow where Kenshin lay, he felt the heat inch toward him and smelled the burning flesh from the town. He gagged on the vomit running through his throat. The flames finally came upon him he screamed loud as the flames overtook his feet, soon the smell of his own burning flesh filled his nose. The vomit he was trying so hard to suppress came out his mouth as he let out another cry of pain. He lay there his cheek pressing hard into his own vomit, the golden flames slowly crept up his back.
Kenshin cried as his life slowly fled his body.
"Kaoru, I'm so sorry," His eyes burned as hot tears ran down his cheeks. "I said I would be there, for you, for our son. But it looks as if I will not be able to keep the promise that I so wanted to."
But just before his life completely left his body he herd a voice.
Kenshin, we understand, we love you and know you tried your hardest. The voice left and Kenshin closed his eyes a sense of piece washed over his soul as the flames washed over the wound on his back, his face scrunched up as the pain passed from his back and engulfed his neck he let out one last cry of pain and his life was lost.
