The day had arrived for Lindsey Butterfield to meet the family of her longtime boyfriend, Joe Roscoe. Nervous was an understatement. She'd pulled out pretty much the whole contents of her wardrobe trying to find something suitable. In the end, she settled for a pair of black skinny jeans, a chiffon blouse and her black tweed jacket, a pair of black pumps to finish the outfit. Stepping out from her house, she hailed a taxi as they set off to the Roscoe residence.
"Boys, get yourselves ready! She'll be 'ere soon." Yelled Sandy to both Ziggy and Freddie.
"He's taking ages in the toilet, tell him to hurry up." Freddie yelled from upstairs, fighting with Ziggy so they could both make themselves look at least half decent.
"Mum! I'm hungy!" Robbie and Jason said, hanging around the kitchen as they were play fighting in the kitchen
"Oh come on, boys. It's not safe out 'ere, go fight in there." Sandy replied to the eight year old twins, shooing them into the living room.
The twins groaned, shrugging their shoulders as they ran into the living area, continuing with the fighting that they were doing.
"Got ya'." Joe yelled, swooping Jason up into his arms in an attempt to break up the fight. "No fighting, alright?" He said sternly, placing the little boy back to the floor.
"Lookin' smart, love. I can't wait to meet this girl of yours." Sandy remarked, placing a kiss on Joe's cheek as she got back to preparing the food.
"She's gorgeous, you'll be impressed." Joe replied, walking into the kitchen and helping his mum with the meal
Just as the boys ran downstairs, the doorbell went.
"That'll be her. Get the door will ya', Fred?" Joe yelled, walking over to the mirror to check his hair and that he looked okay.
Freddie scoffed at his older brother. Getting him to answer the door to his girlfriend was out of order, in his mind anyway. He had better things to do than make small talk with his possible sister-in-law. Sighing, he opened the door to see Lindsey stood in the doorway. His eyes met with hers and he felt as though his heart skipped a beat.
"Hi, I'm Lindsey. Is um, is Joe in?" Lindsey asked awkwardly, flashing a smile at Freddie.
"Hm? Oh, yeah. He's in the living area. Come in." Freddie had to snap himself out of his trance, stepping out of the way to let the female in.
Lindsey smiled gently in response, stepping into the house and heading into the living area where Joe was. Freddie walked away and smiled discreetly to himself as he closed the door.
"So, what are your interests?" Sandy asked Lindsey as they started finishing up their meal.
"Well, I'm currently studying to be a Doctor. Dreamt of it ever since I was about their height." Lindsey gestured to Robbie and Jason with a chuckle.
"And you're going to be an amazing Doctor." Joe added, placing a kiss on Lindsey's cheek.
"Oh, it's so lovely to meet you. Joe never stops talking about how wonderful you are and he's got everything spot on!"
"It's lovely to meet you, thankyou for a…" Lindsey hesitated as she looked down at her plate.. "Lovely meal." She added, smiling.
"Well, I do try my best! Glad you enjoyed it. I better get clearing up." Sandy replied, standing up from her seat as she started piling up the plates in her hand.
Freddie couldn't stop looking at Lindsey, her beauty just amazed him. He knew how wrong it was, the thought of ever looking at Lindsey in that way. Lindsey looked up from her plate and smiled gently over at Freddie sweetly. That smile automatically made him just fall in love with her. He just about managed to flash a smile back before quickly standing up and heading into the kitchen.
As the evening began to draw to a close, Lindsey was sat in the middle of the living area with Jason and Robbie who were running back and forth from their room to show Lindsey all their toy cars and favourite toys.
"Wow, this is great!" Lindsey said, chuckling as they practically piled her up with toys.
Lindsey giggled as they ended up making her drive the small cars around the carpet and play with them. Freddie stepped into the living room as Sandy told him to help get his little brothers ready for bed.
"You got trapped with the cars then?" The male said, taking a seat on the sofa as he looked to Lindsey, Robbie and Jason.
"You could say that." Lindsey chuckled, turning round to face him with a quick smile.
"Little rascal's these two are." He joked, gesturing to the twins to head upstairs. "Come on you two, get to bed." Freddie grabbed the twins hands and guided them upstairs to get ready.
"Sorry, had to help Mum with the dishes." Joe said, walking into the front room and taking a seat on the sofa.
"It's alright, I know what that's like. Your brother's kept me entertained." She chuckled, sitting back on the sofa beside him.
"Which ones?" Joe joked, wrapping his arms around Lindsey as she rested her head on his shoulder.
"Robbie and Jason, the twins right? Oh, and Freddie. Had a brief chat earlier, he's so friendly." She said softly.
"God, he's only like this for guests. Don't be fooled!"
"What's the age gap between you two if you don't mind me asking?"
"He's eighteen so two years. Zig is seventeen. We're all so close, well. Apart from those two little nutters." He gestured to Robbie and Jason who were standing on the staircase as Freddie tried to get them to go upstairs.
"Wow, that's a good thing though, right? There's eight years between me and Kim and we defiantly aren't as close as you lot."
"It's been so lovely to have you over, Lindsey." Sandy said as Lindsey was getting ready to leave.
"Thankyou so much for having me, it's been lovely to meet you." Lindsey replied, putting on her tweed jacket.
"You're welcome over anytime, love." She replied, hugging her in a friendly manner.
"It's been lovely to meet you too." Lindsey hugged Sandy back before gesturing to Freddie and Ziggy.
"Great to meet you, see you soon." Ziggy said, placing a friendly kiss on Lindsey's cheek before hugging her goodbye.
"Yeah, and you. I'll tell Rob and Jase you said goodbye tomorrow, they liked you." Freddie said as Lindsey pulled him into a hug to say goodbye.
"They're wonderful little boys, full of energy. See you all soon." Lindsey replied, placing a kiss on Joe's lips. "See you soon, I love you."
"I love you too." Joe mirrored as Lindsey left. Closing the door behind Lindsey, Joe turned around to face his mum.
"Got a gooden' there, bruv." Ziggy said, placing a hand on his brothers shoulder.
"She was so lovely – I so want to see her as a future Roscoe." Sandy added, walking back through to the kitchen, everyone else following.
"Woah, don't jump ahead Mum! But you're right, she's wonderful."
Lindsey walked down the driveway of the Roscoe house. She stopped and glanced back at the house, letting out a gentle sigh of relief as she bit her lip. There was something about Joe's younger brother, Freddie, that made her heart race. His personality, his smile, his everything. Lindsey shook her head, she knew it was wrong. She sighed and continued walking, jumping into the taxi she had called earlier.
