He woke u with a start, and his eyes flew open, immediately shutting against the bright white of light, after so much darkness. Quickly, he adjusted to his new settings, a hospital ward, alone, his the only bed occupied. He had no idea where he was which worried him, but the more pressing question was, who was he?
"Its nice to see your awake, its been three days now hasn't it, with no problems, so the doctors have agreed to let you go this afternoon. We've got you set up with a new flat and identity so it should work out for you", a chubby brown haired nurse told him as she fussed around his bed.
"Thank you" He smiled weakly.
"Oh and these are the only possessions you were found with" She handed him a small see through plastic bag.
Inside were a silver stopwatch and a long smooth twig.
Later on, when a nurse told him he could leave, he gathered his two possessions and made his way along the ward. Passing the nurses office, he heard a snatch of conversation.
"…leaving today, so me and gemma are moving back to maternity. I think there gonna close this ward off, no use for it now."
He saw through a slit in the blinds, the chubby nurse was talking to a male doctor, and he listened hard for his reply.
"It'll be weird for you then, back to maternity after 3 years of looking after him?"
"Yeah, to be honest it's a bit sad to see him go, me and gem have become quite attached to him, but it's a lot less disturbing down in maternity, instead of just sitting, watching and waiting."
"And the specialist's haven't found anything wrong with him still?"
"No" replied the nurse, "Its weird, but he was found without a scratch on him, perfectly preserved, in the midst of the chaos. He doesn't remember anything though, but I suppose it's for the best, really."
He stepped away from the door, not wanting to hear anymore.
On the street he sat down on a bench, opened the bag and took out first the twig, he could not make out why he had it, but instinct told him to keep it.
Secondly he took out the pocket watch, the moment his skin touched it his heart thumped and echoes surrounded him, and slowly he pressed the catch and opened it.
Human confusion left him, crossing paths with knowledge that was flooding into him, strange creatures unthinkable to humans, smiles of happiness, tears of goodbye.
And then he knew who he was.
