A Classroom Disruption

Professor Blake was in the middle of a lecture about the theory behind paralysis jinxes when an owl began rudely tapping on the window. Lucien was immediately distracted from what he was trying to say, and the students had all paused the scratching of their note-taking quills to look for the source of the sound.

"Davis, open the window, would you?" Lucien asked his student.

Charlie got up from the desk and unlatched the stained-glass window. A big, brown barn owl flew in and dropped a small parcel on the Professor's desk and flew away.

There was no note and no return information on the package. Only Lucien's name. But he smiled. He knew that handwriting.

But he was in the middle of class. Best see to his mail later. "Right, where were we?" he asked the students. "Ah yes, the role of intent, let's see…" Lucien answered his own question and checked his lecture notes.

"Um. Professor?"

Lucien looked up. "Question, Miss O'Brien?"

"Your parcel seems to be moving."

He turned to see that Mattie was correct, the small parcel on his desk was shaking and teetering on its side. "Oh dear. I suppose I'd better open it."

He untied the twine and pulled the plain paper off. And out fell a plant bulb, shaking about, as though it were an egg about to hatch.

The students all craned their necks to see what was happening. They needn't have struggled. All of a sudden, the bulb erupted, and a bright green vine slithered out, straight up to the ceiling. It began twisting and curling as it grew longer and longer. Eventually, it stopped moving, hovering in the air for all to see. Lucien took a step back to look at it properly.

I love you.

All of the student erupted into applause. Lucien laughed, trying to get them to settle down. "If any of you go by the greenhouses today, you can inform Professor Blake that you're all going to fail your OWLs because of her interruption."

With a wave of his wand, the professor vanished the vine into his office. The hour ended shortly after. Lucien promised the students he'd summarize the lecture portion they missed when they had their next class.

After the students filed out, the other Professor Blake entered the classroom. "Did you like my surprise?" she asked.

He grinned, glancing quickly at the door to ensure no one was walking by, and kissed her sweetly. "It was lovely. You'll have to tell me about that plant later."

"Just a common vine. But I did design the charm to make it grow like that," Jean told him proudly.

"Such a clever witch, my wife," he murmured, kissing her once more. "But I must say, it was quite distracting to the students."

"You know I normally wouldn't interrupt, but you were the one who refused to cancel your classes on our anniversary," she pouted.

"Yes, I know. But the fifth years are quite worried about their exams. I'll make it up to you, though, I promise," Lucien added with a quiet growl.

Jean grinned. "I'm all done teaching for the day, and I know you are, too. Shall we lock the door to our rooms and not come out till breakfast?" she suggested.

Lucien responded by grabbing her hand and dragging her down the corridors, her happy laughter echoing through the castle.
