Drabble – Elements

Concentrating very hard on the scrolls in front of him, Hephaestion had not noticed the two puppies that had slowly made their way over to him from across the room. It wasn't until one of them put his paw on his leg, resting his head on his thigh that he looked down at the little face and heard a soft moan. Petting his soft fur, Hephaestion asked him what was wrong.

The little eyes look out the window without his head leaving the leg. Hephaestion saw the large dark clouds approaching from the east moving very quickly. When he looked back down, two little heads were as close as they could be looking up.

The storm looked serious and Hephaestion quickly clear his desk of all the important things that needed his attention, all the while talking quietly and trying to soothe the fragile nerves of his charges. With everything of consequence put safely away, he turned his full attention to the shaking puppies and gathered them up in his arms. He carried them to a room away from windows and the gathering winds.

Thunder crashed outside and the puppies practically climbed up his body to get away from the frightening loud noises.

The puppies were upset and nothing he did seem to help reassure them. Hephaestion heard a nervous voice coming from his now empty room. The puppies starting barking to let the owner of the voice know where they were. Alexander entered the room and looked first at the dogs and then at Hephaestion with larger than normal eyes.

Hephaestion starting talking quietly, trying to soothe the fragile nerves of his new charge. He gathered him in his arms and pulled him close feeling the shaking of his body.

The mighty Alexander was now safe from the storm.
