Ryou took in a deep breath before letting it out. It was a new year and he felt wonderful. He was hopeful for all the adventures that would come in the next three hundred sixty-five days. He was excited for the things he would learn in the coming semester, hanging out with his friends, and whatever else would come with the year.

In his mind, the coming year was a year of opportunity and he would take every one that came to him.

"Landlord!" he heard Bakura yell effectively breaking his chain of thought. "Stop lying in bed and make dinner, you lazy git!"

Ryou sighed, but smiled again as he got off his bed. He was going to have a good year no matter what it threw his way, even if that included Bakura's nasty attitude.

"Hikari!" Marik called at the teen who was frowning and sitting on the couch watching television. His light grunted to show he was listening, but he did not look Marik's way or stop frowning. "What's wrong with you? Aren't you excited for the new year?!"

"Not really. It's just gonna be another year with the same crap," Malik said with a shrug. Then his eyes shifted to Marik suspiciously. "Why are you so happy about the new year? You're not planning anything evil, are you?"

"Me? Why ever would I ever try anything on a holiday such as this?" the yami said with a twisted sort of smile that worried Marik more than comforted him.

"I don't trust you," Malik said bluntly. Then he sighed hopelessly without leaving the couch and turning back to the television. "If you're going to do something bad, don't hurt anyone, okay? I really don't feel like doing damage control on the first day of the year. Understand?"

Though Malik did not see, his yami's smile became more twisted at his word. "I understand perfectly Little Light."

Yami stared at the kitchen entrance with narrowed eyes and slightly hunched shoulders. Why did he feel a chill go down his spine suddenly?

"Yami, are you alright?" Yugi asked in concern at Yami's expression. Then, when Yami looked at him, he said, "You look really tense."

"I'm fine Yugi," Yami said putting a smile on his face to ease the teen's fears. "I just had a bad feeling just now. It's probably nothing really. Tell me more about your… um… What did you call them again?"

Yugi's worried expression left his face and was replaced with an excited smile. "My new year's resolutions. First, I was thinking of-"

Then they both jumped in surprise as the sound of glass shattering loudly came from the front.

"Grandpa?!" Yugi shouted as he rushed out of the kitchen with Yami following close behind. Once they reached the front, they both gasped at the sight of a large rock in the midst of crushed glass in the middle of the game shop. "What happened in here?!"

Yami stepped forward into the glass to pull off the piece of paper stuck to the rock. He read the paper before an angry frown came over his face. He stretched out the paper to Yugi with a shake of his head. "Yugi, I think you will want to read this."

Yugi took the paper with apprehension before reading the paper aloud. "Happy New Year from… Marik and Bakura."

Yugi sighed as he crumpled the paper and walked back inside the house. "I'll go wake up Grandpa."
