A/N: This is yet another fic that's been sitting in my notebooks; it will continue. I just needed to get it started.
This idea was actually spawned when Lightning surfing the Dead Dunes bumped into the stereotypes of my home state, California. I've never surfed; I lived too far inland.
Obligatory Disclaimer: I do not own FFXIII or anything related to it.
Surf's Up: Caught Inside
'Drip. Drip. Drip.'
A headful of pink hair lifts from its resting place. Blue eyes blearily peer at the door as it softly closes.
"How is he?" As quiet as the whisper is, it echoes around the room's other three occupants. The slowly awakening woman blinks the sudden onset of tears away."
"The same." She pauses to collect herself. "The doctors say he'll be okay." Another pause as she swallows the knot rising in her throat. "He'll need physical therapy, and they'll know more as that goes on..." No longer able to contain herself, she stands and approaches the couple at the door. She burrows into her sibling's shoulder.
Wrapping her arms around the smaller woman clinging to her is easier than it once was. Aqua blue eyes scan over the blond behemoth before flinching away. Beside her, a tall silver-haired man with soft green eyes watch the two women somberly.
"It'll be okay, Serah." He places a hand on the smaller woman's shoulder in comfort. "Snow's strong and determined. This won't keep him down long." A small smile graces his lips in encouragement.
Serah looks up at him. "I know. It's just so hard seeing him like this." She wipes her tears away as she steps away from her sister.
Three pairs of eyes snap to the bed as Snow shifts. Ice blue eyes open slowly as he struggles to focus. Voice raspy from disuse, he says, "Hey, guys. What's up?"
"Tch. Not you." Strong slim hands push his shoulders back onto the bed. He blinks up into Lightning's stern visage. He didn't notice her move from the doorway.
"Hey, Sis." The pain medication doesn't quite mask the pulling of stitches or the throbbing of abused muscles and bones. Casting a rather lopsided version of his trademark grin at his wife, he lies back. "Guess I'll just stay here, then."
