Heart of Gold
By Faronon Star Wolf
A/N: I got tired of reading the angst-ridden Valentine fics, so I wrote one where Usagi was not moping about being single, or not getting Valentine cards, or any number of things. That's not the be-all and end-all of Valentine's day, you know.
So, AU, set in America, because it's Valentine's Day, not Black Day. I didn't use any names, but I'm sure you can figure out who they are.

A slight impact against the back of his head caught his attention, and as he turned, a second small, light object bounced off his forehead. Blinking in surprise, he reached out reflexively for the object that had hit him.
Heart shaped and light green, the red words "Get real" taunted his current state of mind, and he glanced up to see long blonde ponytails, a broad smile, and laughing blue eyes.
A bit put off, he watched with a raised eyebrow as she excused herself from her friends and walked over, carrying a bag of the same candies that she had just been throwing at him. With a bright smile, she sat on the stool next to him.
"Happy Valentine's Day, jerk," she greeted him cheerfully. Startled, he took a sip of his coffee and grimaced at the taste. It had cooled as he brooded over the next day and what it would mean. Pushing the cup away gloomily, he replied.
"Happy capitalism day, I would think. And isn't that tomorrow?"
"So?"
With a shrug at her response, he turned his attention back to the wall behind the counter. A few minutes later, she was still sitting beside him, looking at the messages on the candies and giggling softly, eating some of the ones she had read and placing others in a small pile in front of her. "Why so happy, Meatball Head? Got a hot date?"
She glanced at him, puzzled. "Why do I need a reason to be happy? Valentine's Day isn't all about romantic love, you know. Sometimes it's better if all you have are friends." With that, she grabbedher bag of candies and skipped back to her friends, where they talked for a few minutes, giggling, then swept out the door.
Looking back at her pile of forgotten candies, he reached out and brought them closer to him. Turning them over, he looked at the messages pressed on them.
There were only two sayings. The majority of the candies had the phrase "Heart of Gold" on them, but there was a single one that didn't. One single candy, with an ambiguous message on it."You and me."
A slight smile crossed his face as he looked down at the heart-shaped candies, and finally he swept them off the counter and into the palm of his hand, then slipped them into his pocket.
With a now cheerful wave to his friend, he walked out of the arcade.
Perhaps he would deliver some Valentine cards this year.
