So....This is a short drabble about what could have happened after the series. I wrote it is a apathetic frame of mind, and it seemed to me that the series had no real way of turning out happily--not in a canon way, anyway. I don't really believe in Daisuke and Riku together, I have no idea why, so that is kind of obvious too. Angsty. Last paragraph doesn't match terribly well, but anyway. I'm pleased with it. Enjoy.
Please, she whispers, just please.
Satoshi vanishes first. His transitory position in their lives has been well established since he first showed up back in middle school, so no one is surprised when he stops coming to class. He has already graduated university, Daisuke tells no one. Risa, who had hoped for a relationship once, years ago, does not act as though he ever existed. Riku doesn't understand why he stuck around for as long as he did. Daisuke misses him very badly, but she doesn't understand this either. He's gone, she thinks, there's no point in missing him. Satoshi vanishes first, but he isn't missed.
I don't want to be alone.
Daisuke disappears the day after graduation. He doesn't tell anyone, not even Riku where he's going, or even that he is leaving. She doesn't find out until two weeks later, when she calls him, and his mother tells her he's gone. She doesn't say where he is—she doesn't know. Risa cries for days; Riku says and does nothing. She knows he will never come back to her—their relationship ended long ago. When Risa stops crying, she tries to find him—neither Riku nor Daisuke's mother helps. Daisuke leaves second, missed by every one, but he never returns.
Come back to me, she begs.
Riku leaves on their twentieth birthday. Risa brings her to a bar, with as many friends as are still in town, and then loses herself in the festivities. When Risa looks up, it is a quarter to midnight and Riku is gone. Risa cries for weeks, and searches for her twin, but it's in vain. All she has left is a note, marked by teardrops and crumpled in frustration. The words 'sorry' 'love you' and 'don't follow me' stand out, and Risa hates them all. Riku leaves too, and then there is only Risa left.
Please, take me too, Risa cries, I don't want to be left behind.
Risa leaves years after the others. A car accident—skidding metal, screeching rubber and a terrible crunching sound—takes her where she wants to go, at long last. She brings nothing with her, and her parents find all her belongings still in place. She has become successful, learning to depend upon herself, and finally she's ready to leave. She doesn't have to be searched for, because her body is right there, for all to see. She doesn't leave a note, but she does cry before leaving the house, the familiar loneliness gripping her. Risa leaves last, but there is no one left to miss her.
