Author Notes: I went to an anime convention and at a fanfiction panel, we given a challenge to make Dolores Umbridge a sympathetic character. I wrote this in about an hour. Please tell me what you think.

Disclaimer: I don't own Harry Potter and I'm not making any money from this. I'm merely borrowing.

A little girl of seven was crying in agony as her father thrust in and out of her. He bent down and whispered in her ear, "That's my good little slut. Cry for me baby girl." At that, he released himself in his "baby girl."

Later that night that little girl, Dolores Umbridge, was in her room with her face buried in her pillow, trying to block out the memories unsuccessfully. It wasn't the first time her father had taken her like that, and she knew it wouldn't be the last. More than once, she had almost told her mother, but she had lost her nerve. Would her mother really believe that Daniel Umbridge, one of the top Aurors, was raping his only child? All Kathleen Umbridge saw was the good Daniel, the Daniel that could never do anything wrong.

She knew one person she could tell, the one person that would believe her. It was Sapphire Jacobs, her tutor who was also her best friend. That night, as she tried to get to sleep with all of her demons haunting her, she made up her mind that she would tell Sapphire.

Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to go to Sapphire until a week later and her father had the opportunity to take her four more times. Sapphire came to little Dolores' house for her weekly tutoring session. Little Dolores was shaking so badly from the previous night. For the first time, her father had made her perform oral sex, and she gagged due to his eagerness. In her haste to get him out of her mouth during her panicked breathing, she had accidentally bitten him. He cast a hex on her that made her feel like she had been physically beaten black and blue. Either Sapphire didn't notice Dolores' behavior, or she pretended not to notice.

About halfway through her lessons, her father came in. Dolores sat up stiffly as he asked how the session was going. Sapphire answered with a smile. When Daniel left, Dolores asked, "Can we stop for a moment?"

Sapphire smiled, "I guess. Is there something you want to discuss?"

Dolores bit her lip. "What do you do if there's someone in danger?"

"Tell someone you trust." Sapphire answered with worried eyes.

Dolores took a deep, steadying breath. "Sapphire, it's about my father. He…he…he has sex with me, but I…I don't want it." She finished in a rush while looking up at her best friend through the fringe of her bangs.

Sapphire wore a grim expression. "Dolores, do not tell lies, especially lies that could get someone sent to Azkaban.

"It's not a lie though. He's been doing it for a while."

"Dolores, there's something you should know. If you say something that no one wants to believe to be true, they won't, no matter how true it may be."

Dolores wore a shocked expression. "It's true through. He hurts me every time he sticks his thingie in me."

Sapphire shook her head, still wearing the grim expression. "It doesn't matter. No one will believe you." There was a tense silence that followed before Sapphire continued, "Let's get back to work."

That day, young Dolores learned something about people. They had a tendency towards wistful thinking, meaning they only believed what they wanted to be true. The rape continued until Dolores finally left home. She never forgot that lesson she learned from her once best friend. Later on, as an adult, she used the same logic on a young Harry Potter.
