Chapter One
The walls were rough on his back, the air filled with the putrid smell of death and the floor was wet and slimy with blood and other fluids he really didn't want to contemplate.
The surrounding area was exactly 9 steps long and 6 steps wide, there was no candle flame but cracks of light could be seen through the stone, taunting him with the thought of freedom. He had tried to crack through them but they were reinforced with magic.
He didn't know how long he had been here, just that it seemed for eternity. He was quite sure that the lack of light was used in hopes of driving him insane; perhaps hoping he would reveal some magnificent secret that would win the war for them.
Why should he not know? After all his profession was filled with secrecy and he had been about for as long as any of these men could remember. Surely he should know something.
But everything he knew was being tortured out of him and he regretted it. He was sorry but he couldn't help it. He couldn't!
That curse.
The one that felt like a million red ants running through his veins, the one that felt like hot pokers were going to burn him to death. The one he always succumbed to.
He was weak and alone. So alone.
He didn't even know if he was sane any more. He wished there was someone there. Someone other than his torturers.
And he hated himself for thinking that because there had been others.
But then the others would loose their purpose and would be disposed of.
They never spoke to him anyway.
He knew he wasn't a pretty site, emaciated and shaking constantly from the after effects of the curse. They feared they'd become like him.
Oh how for once he wished he would have someone to talk to.
Not known to him, that wish was soon to be granted.
