Surprise

Katie sat alone in the lounge, staring at the small, plastic tree. It was decorated with cheap ornaments from a local Muggle grocery store. It had been the best that she and Oliver could afford, but it was one of the most precious things that they owned, because it was theirs.

With her knees tucked up to her chin, she smiled. Even though the tree was completely barren of presents, there couldn't have been a thing to make this upcoming Christmas better. She had Oliver, and that was all she needed, because fancy gifts and food couldn't create as much joy as a night in his arms could.

It was just impossible.

The door creaked open, and Katie heard the hard footsteps over the bare floor boards. She didn't move, because the first thing he would do was go to her, kiss her once and then collapse right by her side.

But he didn't. Instead, he knelt by their little tree and carefully placed a small gift-wrapped box underneath it's fake green branches. The bow was gold and too big, and it definitely did not look professionally wrapped. Only, it didn't matter, it was the thought that counted - and what was inside would make up for the mediocre decoration.

"Hello, love," he then whispered, and flopped on the couch next to Katie. "Surprise."

They had agreed on not to get each other a gift, given their financial situations. But it didn't matter, because tears were in her eyes and her teeth gnawed at her lower lip. "I love you," she said, snuggling into his chest.

Author's Note: Argh, this seems so terrible and boring, but I don't care. I have to start somewhere. Plus, the idea sounded much better in my head. XD
