Jonny was in QuestWorld Central. So was Jessie. They hadn't logged into
QuestWorld though. Good, Allandra thought, at least their being there would
make it easier to be evasive and cover for them. Hadji was meditating.
Again.
Allandra wandered around outside, even went up to the top of the
lighthouse. After awhile, she went in.
She found Dr. Quest in his study, working tediously with his computer and
the disks, folders and looseleaf paper that cluttered his desk.
"You're tired," Allandra said, crossing her arms and resting her elbows on
Dr. Quest's shoulders. "Go get some sleep."
"No, not yet," Dr. Quest said. "I have to finish this before we go to
Madagascar tomorrow."
"Get some rest, Quest. I can finish this for you." Dr. Quest gave her a
strange look. "Good grief," Allandra said, "you act like I've never done
secretary work before."
"Have you?"
"Well…no. But I know exactly what you're doing."
"Really…I'm almost done."
"Uh-uh. Go. Now. Or I'll destroy all your coffee."
"All right! All right! Anything but that! I'm going."
"Then go." Dr. Quest left.
Allandra sighed and finished Dr. Quest's organizing. I didn't take her long,
but it would have taken Dr. Quest longer.
She wandered into the living room where she found Race sacked out on the
couch watching a shoot-'em-up made-for-TV movie. Allandra plunked herself
down beside him.
"Hi Daddy, mind if I join you?" Allandra said.
"Sure Al," he said, and he put his arm on top of the couch behind Allandra's
shoulders. With his other hand he offered her the bowl of popcorn.
"Popcorn?" he asked.
"Yes it is," Allandra said, took a handful and started popping pieces into
her mouth.
"Are you eating it as a human or absorbing it as a Janai?" Race asked.
"Daddy," Allandra said, "this is popcorn. It is not just something to be
absorbed." Allandra studied one piece carefully. Then she took an un-popped
kernel and held it up with her other hand.
"Look," she said. "Isn't it amazing how something so small can be blown so
out of proportion is so little time?"
"What a concept," Race said. He shook his head. "Where do you come up with
this stuff?"
"I dunno." Allandra yawned and rested her head on Race's shoulder. "You know
what?" she asked. "I think this is what family is all about." She yawned
again and fell asleep.
Race picked up Allandra and carried her to her room and tucked her in. He
wandered around the house, saw Benton's office spotless-clean for the first
time ever.
He went to QuestWorld Central, where he saw Jessie and Jonny under the desk.
Jessie explained that they were rewiring the QuestWorld computer.
*My little whiz kid,* he thought. He looked across the room and saw Hadji
getting up from meditating.
"Good night, Race," Hadji said, leaving.
"Good night, Hadji," Race replied. He yawned loudly, and, seeing Jessie and
Jonny getting up, retired to bed.
And as Roger "Race" Bannon fell asleep, he mused, *I think Al was right, 'I
think this is what family is all about'*
