Author's Note: So, I wrote this really long AxelRiku oneshot awhile ago. Then my computer died, and said oneshot does not exist anymore! orz I tried rewriting it, but I was hit by writer's block. ;; This is basically the first thing I've written in awhile, so sorry if it's really... bad.
It's Axel's birthday today.
Riku has the perfect gift, something the redhead had always wanted: A silver lighter with black flames engraved on one side, flurry of dancing flames on the other. Axel is always complaining about only being able to afford the cheap lighters, and how he wants one that he could really call his. He will be surprised when he opens the box, Riku muses, and probably try giving it back. But that doesn't matter as long as he likes it.
The party is going to be at his house. There's going to be balloons and streamers and party games that are meant for first graders. Demyx's band is going to play until their fingers start to hurt, and then they'll switch to the CD's. The choices of food will most likely earn complaints from the girls, who all recently decided to lose ten pounds together. Riku could already hear Olette saying that the disco ball and fog machine are a bit much. But that doesn't matter as long as Axel has a good time.
People will probably go home early. They'll yawn and stretch and say that they had a good time, but it's time for them to go. And as more and more guests leave, the party will slow down then eventually die. Soon only Axel and Riku will be there with bad pop music blaring, and soda all over the carpet. They'll argue over who has to clean up the mess; Axel'll say that he's the birthday boy, and he shouldn't have to do anything he doesn't want to. Most likely, he will win. But that doesn't matter as long as they laugh about it.
When everything is finally clean except for frosting that somehow ended up on the ceiling, the two will collapse on the floor, laughing. Axel's hand will find its way into Riku's hair, and nothing else will matter except for the two of them. Touching will become kissing, and kissing will become even more. When it's all over, the redhead apologizes for not thanking Riku for the party earlier. But that doesn't matter as long as he loves him.
It's Axel's birthday today.
Riku doesn't have the money to buy anything fancy; he can barely pay his bills. He grabs a card that says, you're eighteen now, from a drug store, and writes as much as he can in the small space it gives, although no one will ever read it. But that doesn't matter as long as he got him one.
There isn't going to be a party. The balloons, streamers, and party games are still in their spots at the store. Demyx's band is playing at a wedding tonight, and the only thing in the fridge is left over pizza. The girls are giggling over a romantic comedy they're watching at the movies, while Sora is forced to buy them popcorn without the butter. But that doesn't matter as long as he's happy.
The house is spotless and quiet. The teen tries turning on the radio, but it seems like all the stations are on commercials or are sports channels. He shuts it off. Riku settles for a book, and picks out one of Axel's favorites, even though it's filled with words he doesn't understand. But that doesn't matter as long as Axel enjoyed it.
Axel went away one day. He doesn't laugh with Riku anymore. He doesn't touch, kiss, or hold him close after making love. He just packed his bags and left early in the morning, leaving Riku nothing but a piece of paper that said two words. But that doesn't matter as long as he left a piece of him behind.
Happy birthday.
