It seems to Zuko now, as their lips meet, their tongues duel, that the fates have been planning this since the Fire Nation first struck over one hundred years ago...
He shifts his weight, not wanting to crush her, and slides his hand across the pillows, twining his fingers in her hair without breaking the kiss. She pulls back at his touch and he groans at the loss of contact, eyes squeezed shut whilst he regains his composure. When he opens them she's smiling, a blissful smile full of contentment; a smile that makes her eyes light up and leaves him no option but to grin back.
He gazes at her beautiful face; her dark hair, splayed on the pillow, a wonderful contrast against his pale skin. His liquid amber eyes drink in every minute detail of her countenance whilst his mind races over all the events that guided them here.
His whole life he's felt so lost and confused but he sees now that that was out of his hands. Everything has led to this moment, this union on Ember Island, just days before the comet which will undoubtedly change all their lives. From the day that Fire Lord Sozin made his fatal choice on Roku Island the universe has been conspiring to throw Zuko and this glorious young woman, last water bender of the South, together. The answer to his ancestor's mistakes...
And to think he hadn't even realised.
It's all too apparent now, though, as her hand slowly rises and grazes the scar on his face, he sees all the connections laid out before him; destiny's path finally, irrevocably, illuminated...
He flinches involuntarily as she makes contact with his cheek but she doesn't move her hand. She traces it lightly over the dry, charred skin; perilously close to his burned and damaged eye. Her skin is smooth and comforting against his own and it's almost a disappointment when her fingers disappear into his messy hair.
She guides his head down and their lips meet again, softly, slowly. They both want to remember this; every touch, every kiss, every skipped heartbeat. With a knowing smile he grazes his teeth across her lower lip and surrenders to his fate.
It feels so right.
Like divine intervention.
