A shriek startled me from a deep sleep. I tried to ignore it; however, another squeal and heaven footsteps caused me to jump out of bed. It was Bonnie. Quickly, stepping into a pair of pants, I went to find her. She was in the living room, gazing out the biggest window in the house with excitement.
"Are you okay?" I asked approaching her.
"It's snowing!" She exclaimed.
"You woke me up after a long night, by giving me a heart attack I might add, because it is snowing?"
"Yes, I can't build a snowman by myself now can I?"
I wanted to tell her no, that she could very well build a man made of snow all by herself and that I was going back to fact I opened my mouth to say just that, but her wide eyes and huge smile were too beautiful to disappoint.
"No, I guess you couldn't." I sighed, giving in.
After throwing on our jackets, scarves, and gloves I followed as she raced to the snow. She fell to the ground and began moving her arms and legs, making a snow angle. I couldn't hide my smile as she laughed.
"Alright, are we going to make this snowman or what?"
As if I had just reminded her she hopped up from the frozen ground and nodded. "You can start making the bottom and I'll work on the middle and his head."
"Yes, ma'am." I responded and got to work. And for twenty minutes that is what I did, making sure the bottom half of her snowman was perfect.
"You know, I thought Caroline was the bossy one." I joked after the fifth time of being told to add more snow to the already gigantic ball.
"Not when it comes to snowmen." Bonnie said so seriously it made me chuckle.
"What?" She demanded.
"Nothing, nothing. Can we put this thing together now?"
"As soon as you smooth out that section of lumpy snow." She pointed to a spot that was uneven.
"Oh, right here?" I asked and she nodded. "Well, I know just how to fix that." I took the chunk of extra snow and formed it into a much smaller ball.
"Don't you dare. Enzo, drop the snowball." She demanded.
"Okay." I threw the snow into the air and even though she tried to back away it hit her side.
"Oh, it's on." She declared.
With that snowballs and laughter were flying all around us. For a moment it was perfect, but then Bonnie froze. The snow dropped from her hand and her eyes fell shut. It took less than a second for me to stop her from hitting the ground. When she landed in my arms her eyes opened again.
"What happened?" she asked.
"You fainted, straight into my arms actually. You know, if you wanted my attention you didn't have to go to such extremes." I winked, trying to make light of the situation.
"Shut up, Enzo." she said weakly.
"Come on let's get you inside" I lifted her to her feet.
"But our snowman, we have to finish making him." she protested.
I shook my head. "I'm not worried about the snowman, Bonnie. I'm worried about you. So, let me take of you and then we can build the crazy man of snow later."
Reluctantly, she nodded and allowed me to guide her inside. I instructed her to go lay down as I made her something to eat. I carried a plate and a mug up to her room.
"Wow, a peanut butter sand. What, couldn't spring for the jelly?" she joked and I laughed along with her, but I was still worried about her little incident.
"When is the last time you've had a real meal? Or had a good night's sleep?" I questioned.
"It's been awhile I guess." she shrugged. "I've just been helping everyone."
"I think it's time to help yourself." I took her hand without thinking. "Finish the sandwich, drink the coco, and take a nap. And in a few hours when you're well rested we can make your perfect snowman." A smile grew on her face as she agreed.
When I left the room I began gathering supplies for the snowman. I found the perfect hat, scarf, and the biggest and brightest carrot for his nose. Bonnie came down a few hours later, happier than I had ever seen her before. We spent the rest of the night dancing and laughing in the snow as we made our snow friend.
