Thalia never thought she'd fall in love.
She was too afraid. She thought love ended in ruin. Like her mother. Love did that to her. Zeus did that to her.
But everything changed when she met Luke. The way he smirked when he was thinking about a new prank. The way his eyes brightened when he laughed or smiled. The way he took care of Annabeth like he was her father. Like she was his own. She loved it all.
So when that know-it-all Hunter Zoƫ Nightshade came along, she got angry. She got really angry.
How could she talk about Luke like that? He would never betray her! He would be there for her no matter what. She just knew it. She felt it.
Every time that elfish face looked her way, her heart melted (not like she'd ever admit that, of course).
She tried to hide it, and Luke never seemed to notice her feelings, but she could see that knowing look in those big, grey eyes that could only belong to Annabeth.
"Why don't you talk to him; tell him how you feel?" she asked one day.
"I don't want to ruin our friendship, " Thalia replied simply, trying to keep her face from flushing.
"But, Thals-" She was interrupted by a soft voice Thalia immediately recognised as Luke's.
"Thalia?"
"Yes?" She was trying her hardest to keep her voice from cracking and force away the blush that had crept on to her face.
"Can I talk to you for a minute?"
"Of course," she replied, getting up and brushing off her black, ripped jeans.
She jogged up to him, turned to remind Annabeth to keep herself safe and call if she needed them-"Yeah, yeah, yeah. Just go."-and they left.
They walked in comfortable silence until Luke stopped.
He looked lost in thought and appeared to be having an argument with himself. Silence hung in the air and she felt as if it were suffocating her. So she broke it.
"What did you need to talk to me about, Luke?"
He looked at her oddly, as if just remembering that she was there. He took her in for a moment: the wonderful Thalia Grace. And then he kissed her.
And, to his great surprise and pleasure, she kissed him back.
