The Shiki Daughter
Preface: The Staircase.
He found her on the wooden staircase that seemed to lead to the same place, the staircase that reminded him of life.
They had sat typically beside each-other in the pointless class. She had sat stiffly and hadn't even bothered getting the Pocky sticks from her pocket.
"Where's my chocolate?" he demanded rudely. He thought this would strike a reaction from her. A glare… he might have even accepted a slap. But she just stared right ahead. Ignoring him.
It was unlike her. Usually it was him with the stoic expression and her with a slightly irritated façade. They had swapped roles, though. Even so, he had never, ever ignored her.
"Well? You have some. You always do. Where is it?"
Ten words under ten seconds. It was a new personal best for him, but she seemed unlikely to praise and congratulate him.
"Please?"
Manners, he thought; the good old magic word. Except she still stared straight ahead.
"Don't make me get it myself."
Nothing.
You don't want me to get it myself. It'll look like I'm perving over you."
Her face twitched – just slightly.
"Fine. You asked for it."
He reached out towards her skirt, slipping his hand in the pocket, immediately discovering plastic. Yes – the chocolates.
And, with her refusal to react, she didn't move. At all.
Hanabusa Aidou saw this motion.
"Are you feeling her up?"
She instantly rose from her chair, and walked (unexcused) out of the classroom.
Everyone stared at him accusingly.
"What?" he hissed.
"We're waiting for you to go after her so we can talk about what happened," Hanabusa Aidou answered.
He glared at her. "Why should I go after her?" he asked, though he was secretly hoping this argument would end soon so – yes – he could go after her.
"You obviously did something. She never goes anywhere without you," Ruka answered.
"I did something? Aidou's the one who made that comment about me raping her or whatever!"
"You raped her?" Takuma Ichijo suddenly jumped in.
The entire Night Class was suddenly discussing him raping her.
It wasn't really his fault she had left – was it? Though he couldn't help feeling her bad mood was his fault in the first place.
So ignoring the knowing glance from Ruka, he walked off.
That was when he found her on the wooden staircase. She was sitting on the eighth step from the bottom.
She was crying.
"Why are you crying?"
"Is it because of me raping you?"
"I mean, I didn't really rape you, that's just what Aidou –"
"I'm sorry."
"it's my fault, isn't it?"
"Tell me what I did wrong."
Finally, she answered him.
"You did nothing."
"Then why –"
She stood up and walked over to him, with thirty centimetres between them "I've… done something horrible… disgusting… seriously gross… all this time, I've felt so unforgivable, and I've felt it all this time. This entire time, I've felt it and I shouldn't… the emotions I feel… aren't fair, considering…"
She looked up him with her indigo-blue eyes.
"Tell me, please."
She looked down, ashamed. "I'm in love with you."
He took a step towards her, filling the once empty space.
"What's wrong with that?" he asked, smiling – just slightly.
"You're my brother."
