Helen would watch her children.

She would watch them from inside as they sat in the back garden. She watched as Lucy cried and Edmund comforted her. She watched as Susan looked away, not

meeting anyone's eyes. She watched as Peter put his head in his hands.

Helen watched her children, but she didn't understand.

Helen would listen to her children from behind closed doors.

"I can't reach it Susan! I hate being so small." ... "It's only a few more years Lu, and you'll be grown again."

"I reached for Rhindon today and nothing was there; it's strange not having the weight at my side." ... "I know what you mean."

Helen listened to her children, but she didn't understand.

Helen would pretend not to notice.

She pretended not to notice that Lucy now spent most of her free time sitting in her wardrobe. She pretended not to notice the revulsion in Susan's eyes when she

suggested that they all go to the zoo. She pretended not to notice when Peter was startled by the bronze lion statue outside the city library. She pretended not to

notice when Edmund put his arm around Peter's shoulders and said "I know, Pete, I know."

Helen would pretend not to notice, because she didn't understand what had happened to her babies.
