Summary: Jack makes a gaff at a party that lets slip something almost as classified as the Stargate itself (short one-shot)

"So, how long have you two been married?" The General's wife asked.

The moment the question was asked, Sam knew that she had made a mistake a few hours earlier. Jack had been worried about going to this formal function, so Sam had told him to act like they were off-world, at one of the many diplomatic parties with their various allies. Of course she forgot about their one rule that only applied when they were off world.

"Dear, they are both…." The General began.

"Four years, six months next Tuesday." Jack replied automatically. "Isn't that right, dear?"

"Yes, Sir." Sam replied, trying to remind him that she was his XO at the moment, not his wife.

"Colonel, Major?" the General asked.

"Sir, I suggest you go discuss this with General Hammond." Sam replied. "General, Ma'am, if you will excuse us."

"Of course, Major. I do think I should talk to General Hammond." The General replied.

Sam waited until the General and his wife were out of earshot before turning on Jack.

"Damn it, Jack." She said, "What the hell were you thinking?"

"Sorry, Sam." Jack replied. "I was just doing what you told me. You know I hate these things."

Sam just sighed. Daniel was going to get a big laugh out of this. It was true though, they had been happily married for four and a half years, having tied the knot on an offworld mission. Sure there may have been some alcohol, and a strip tease, involved but it had been what they had wanted. Of course there had been some issue with General Hammond and the President about their nuptials, but since they had also secured a valuable trade deal for a plant that had been the source of a new drug that made current cancer treatments sixty percent more effective, they had not been reprimanded too much. In fact it did help in a number of situations where Sam and Jack being married had avoided some potentially violent encounters with young men with overinflated opinions of themselves.

"Colonel, Major. Would you mind explaining why I just spent the last ten minutes with General Markaway explaining your… unique status?" Hammond asked, as he approached the couple.

"My fault, Sir." Sam said. "I briefed the Colonel to use standard protocol for our out of country negotiations. Then the General's wife asked a direct question about our… status."

"Colonel, you instructed to let the Major field any such questions for the rest of the evening." Hammond said with a sigh, running his hand over his bald head.

"Yes, Sir." Jack replied.

"And for God's sake, don't mention the twins." Hammond ordered.

"Understood." Sam said.

"How are they, by the way?" Hammond inquired.

"Good, Sir. Daniel is watching them tonight. I think Cassie is keeping him company, she was always fascinated with them." Sam replied.

"Good. Enjoy the rest of your evening." Hammond said, before leaving.

"Yes, Sir." Sam replied, before turning to Jack. "Half an hour before we can leave. Suck it up, Airman."

"Yes, Ma'am." Jack said with a cheeky tone. "Drink?"

"Sure."

The End.
