"Come down and play with me," Baby Terra begged, her tiny beady eyes longing to play with her new friend.
"I can't. Mama said if I fly too low, I'll die."
"I don't want Skye to die!"
Skye smiled shyly. "I don't want to die either."
..
"Terra, run straight, there is one of those berries left over there. It must be your birthday treat."
"Wait up, Skye, I can't run as fast as you fly."
Skye waited patiently till her friend caught up to her and grinned as she became a teenager. "Happy Birthday, Terra, now you're the same age as I am."
..
"Hey, Skye?"
"Yes?"
They've somehow reached a pace they can match after years of practice, Terra walking just a little fast, Skye flying just a little slow.
"I love you."
Skye smiled. "I love you too."
"No, I mean- I love that way."
Skye's voice was sad as she replied, "I love you that way too, but there's just no way we can be together, is there? Even now I can't fly down and hold like I want to. Like I've always wanted to."
"But, it's us!" Terra insisted, desperately, "Can't we make it work?"
Skye reached out, her bright blue wing just a wee bit short to touch the earth dragon. "Maybe when the sky and earth meet."
