The spring morning of May 23rd, 2028 was perfect. There was sunlight peeking through the windows; it was the nice mix of warm and breezy, everything was great—until Ashleigh walked into her room and it was filled with pink and green smoke.

Lily Potter was Ashleigh Eeb's roommate, and she was perhaps the weirdest person Ashleigh had ever met.

At night, while most normal people would sleep, Lily didn't. She stayed awake and did—well, Ashleigh wasn't exactly sure what she was doing. She would sit on the floor, some nights, and make different colored concoctions—smoothies, maybe? But she never used a blender, instead opting for a large pot. Other nights, Ashleigh would wake up and see Lily making bright, multicolored lights coming out of what looked like a stick. It was probably a trick of the eye, but it still creeped Ashleigh out.

When she came back to her dorm that day, she had to brace herself; Lily got out of class before her and who knew what kind of things she had been up to in the few hours before Ashleigh got back?

She opened the door and right away, a mix of salmon and chartreuse smoke flew out, grazing her face.

"Shut the damn door!" Lily called immediately. "Oh, hi, Ash," she said, getting up and walking over to her. "The door," she said again, reaching over and closing it herself. "I don't know what it is, but I'd still rather not spread it to others."

"What the hell have you done?" Ashleigh asked, trying to peer through the thick smoke.

"Just a little mishap with a project. I'll explain after—promise not to freak out?" Lily said, sticking her hand in her jeans pocket.

"I think it's a little too late for that. There's smoke all over our room. Is it bad for you?"

"Probably not," Lily said, pulling out a stick from her pocket.

"What're you going to do with that stick?" Ashleigh asked nervously.

"One second," she replied, holding it out. "Liquet!" Lily shouted, waving the stick. A jet of purple light came out and wrapped around the smoke, making it disappear.

"What. The. Hell?"

Ashleigh was pretty sure she was going to faint, right there and then.

"Hi," Lily said, holding out a hand. "I'm Lily Luna Potter, and I'm a witch."

"A witch?" Yup, she was definitely going to faint. Or have a stroke. Or both.

"Yeah, I'm a witch. Have been for the past nineteen years," Lily said to Ashleigh, rolling her eyes. "This is a wand." She held out the stick for Ashleigh to see. "That," she said, pointing to the now-visible upturned pot in the middle of the room, "is a cauldron. I make potions, but I also go to uni."

"I'm hallucinating," Ashleigh said, stumbling over to her bed and sitting down, feeling light-headed.

"You're not. Also, you shouldn't tell anyone else. Please keep this between us, thanks."

"You're a witch?" Ashleigh asked, looking at Lily, bewildered. There was no way this was real. This seemed like a fairytale, out of one of Ashleigh's favorite books, but Lily nodded, looking completely serious.

"I am sorry, though. There's absolutely no pimples or warts."

"You're forgiven. Good night," Ashleigh said, laying down and closing her eyes. "Maybe when I wake up I'll be less tired and won't hallucinate things like this…"
