Summary: A word to the wise.
Seated at a desk in the bullpen, a brunette woman listened to the man on the other end of the line. "Of course I want to see her, Jeff. Let me know where and when so we can. Mother hasn't seen her in a year or so. I will clear my calendar for the weekend ... The boys will be ecstatic."
From her position she could see her section chief in his office calmly discussing something with a person or people that she could not see. She waited until Falcon and Radar exited the office, then went to her superior's door and knocked.
Billy Melrose waved her in. "Yes, Mrs. King?"
"Sir, I just wanted to remind you that I am not available this weekend. We have a get-together," answered the civilian aide.
Francine commented sweetly from behind her, "going on a picnic, Dear? Maybe to fly kites?"
Amanda turned to the blond agent, "I don't know yet, Francine." Noticing the director striding up behind her, Mrs. King looked up at Dr. Smyth and added, "I wouldn't want to go anywhere smelling of smoke."
Cigarette holder held at waist level, Dr. Smyth raised his eyebrows inquiringly, "just where is it that you would not go smelling of smoke?"
Agent Desmond glanced over her shoulder then moved out of the line of verbal fire. Billy remained in his chair watching the exchange.
"I wouldn't go anywhere smelling like smoke. I don't know where you plan to be this weekend but I would check my sources. There are people who don't breath well and refuse to have smokers in their presents. Some of them are very good at banishing the offenders from her court." advised Mrs. King.
"And where would this non-smoker be?" he asked.
"Visiting the 'kiddies' almost anywhere," she replied. "Jeff said that she is coming."
Dr. Smyth dismissed her saying, "my regards to your family."
Amanda returned, "and mine to the party." She said goodbye to Mr. Melrose and Francine before walking out smiling. Her eyes met his on her way past.
They nodded to each other, his hand on her arm stopped her briefly and he whispered, "thanks, kiddy."
She smiled brightly, "no problem."
Billy and Francine exchanged looks and straightened up awaiting Dr. Smyth's attention.
