Ben had been arrested. Abigail had almost been run over by a trailer. Riley had lost the Declaration of Independence.

"A largely successful day, I think."

Abigail only grimaced and turned away. "I don't really think this is the time for sarcasm."

"It's always the time for sarcasm," he answered half-heartedly, and then he stared down at the beaten laces of his Converse. "But I am sorry about the Declaration."

"For the hundredth time, it's not your fault," but to him, it didn't sound like she meant it.

He frowned and briefly met her eyes. "But you would have gone for the Declaration."

She opened her mouth to protest, but realized it was probably true and didn't know what to say. "Yes. I probably would have gone for the Declaration."

"Fair enough."

They both stared at the fountain, and finally she realized he was hurt.

"Thank you for saving my life."

He didn't look up at her, but smiled to himself and answered, "You're welcome."
