Stay or Leave

A/n: My first 'Secret Window' fic! YAY FOR ME! Have mercy on me; I don't really do one-shot things… Dave Matthews owns the song 'Stay or Leave' from which I got the title. Mort's thoughts are in italics and his conscience is in bold. The Shooter in this story is to be read as Mort's split persona, who Mort sees in a mirror on the wall.

Summery: Mort doesn't want Shooter in his life any longer. What lengths will he go to destroy him? Will he make it out alive?

What's happening to me? thought Mort Rainey. What does Shooter want from me?

He wants you to stop fighting him, replied his conscience. Give in, and he won't hurt you.

"What are you talking about?" Mort said aloud. "What could he do to hurt me? Everyone I know or care about is DEAD! No one should've been hurt…" He paused.

"Except Ted. Ted was a prick, he deserved what he got,"

"Did he?" asked Shooter. "If so, then Ted ain't the only one. Amy got her comeuppance too,"

Mort growled, grabbing Shooter's shoulders.

"Don't you EVER mention her name to me, you insane son of a…"

Shooter shrugged, still speaking slowly and calmly.

"I only did wha' ya told me to," he said.

Rainey's eyes widened in fear.

"Wuh-what?" he stammered.

No, he thought. I won't let him control me again. I WON'T LET HIM CONTROL ME AGAIN!

How then, asked his conscience. How will you destroy him?

"I-I don't…know," Mort whispered.

There is a way…But you will never be the same again.

"I don't give a damn. I just want him gone,"

Okay. Notice you're holding a gun? Put it to your head and pull the trigger.

"What?" Mort breathed fearfully.

It won't hurt, I promise. You'll be free.

All right…See you in Hell, Shooter.
