A/N: This fic was inspired by a scene from ABC's The Middle. It takes place sometime during the car trip to the Grand Canyon in 4.06. If you enjoy, please let me know!
Also, the song I used in this fic was "Dancing in the Moonlight" by King Harvest. I've found it adds to the mood of the story if you want to play it in the background while you're reading, but that's just a suggestion ;)
"Hey babe," Andy whispered to the hoodie-clad figure curled up in the passenger seat. "Wake up."
April stirred and her eyelashes fluttered open. "Andy? Why did we stop?" she mumbled sleepily. Squinting through the bright lights of the gas station pump, she was just able to make out the eager face of her husband.
Andy's whisper could barely conceal his excitement. "We were running low on gas."
"And you woke me up because…" April prompted, trying to withhold a yawn.
"Shh, babe. Listen."
April squinted up at Andy, whose eyes showed no hint of exhaustion, even after a solid five hours of driving, not to mention the time. She tried to read the joy on his face, but her half-asleep brain couldn't come up with a reason for his excitement. Then she heard it.
It was an old song – one of those songs that gave you a feeling of nostalgia, even if you'd never heard it before. The tune crackled faintly out of the rusted speakers on the gas pump.
We like our fun and we never fight
You can't dance and stay uptight
April felt her cheeks flush. She knew exactly what Andy was doing.
"May I have this dance?" Andy grinned, encasing his warm hands around April's cold ones. Letting a slight smile creep across her face, April slid out of the leather seat and let Andy pull her to her feet. Wrapping her arms around his neck, April began to rock back and forth to the swing of the song. Andy slipped his arms around her waist and pulled her closer into his warmth, till they were swinging in unison.
It's a supernatural delight
Everybody was dancing in the moonlight
April's heavy eyelids fluttered and she lay her head down on Andy's chest. He let his chin rest gently on the top of her head as they continued to sway.
Dancing in the moonlight
Everybody's feeling warm and bright
A small chuckle escaped April's lips.
"What?" Andy asked quietly. "Is it my dancing?"
"No, your dancing's great."
"Then what is it?"
April let out a soft breath. "If someone would have told me yesterday that I'd be dancing in a gas station at two in the morning on the way to the grand canyon, I'd have thought they were crazy."
Andy squeezed his wife tighter against him in a warm embrace. "And yet here we are."
Yeah, maybe it wasn't normal to be dancing in the flickering light of a gas pump, hundreds of miles away from home, with only the twinkling stars as an audience. But then again, they weren't exactly a normal couple.
As the song began to fade, Andy leaned down and placed a quick kiss on the end of April's nose. She sighed and nuzzled her head into his chest as the song came to an end.
It's such a fine and natural sight
Everybody's dancing in the moonlight
Sorry it was a bit short, but if you enjoyed it please leave a review!
