She sat in the Astronomy Tower, her dark brown curls falling straight down her back. She looked out across the school grounds, her coffee colored eyes not really focusing on anything. All she did was think. You could easily tell something was troubling the girl, she was standing straight up, arms crossed over her chest, her coat thrown over her pajamas. The strained look on her face was forlorn, her mind battling with itself.
The grounds were quiet though the wind kicked up the loose fallen snow into little whirlwinds, dispensing quickly as they were made. Hagrid could be seen walking this his lamp toward the back of his hut. The forest lay canopied in the snow, silent and foreboding. The same forest that the centaurs had almost killed her, where the spiders lived, and where Ron's old wild thing of a car now resided. Owls flew in and out of the owlery across the grounds.
She uncrossed her arms and withdrew an expensive quill from her pocket. It was actually a phoenix feather, costing many galleons. It had been a present from an unknown person until just recently. She glided her hand along the silky feather and pushed the tip of the quill, almost puncturing her finger. This quill, funnily enough, had a charm that you couldn't write and lies with it. It was a bright orange in color, with streaks of black near the quill.
She then withdrew a small piece of parchment that looked ripped on one side, folded in half. On the back you could see a black dot, indicating the quill had rested in one spot for some time before starting. She unfolded the paper glanced down at it and folded it again, a frown coming on her face and her chin twitching. She looked up quickly. "How long have you been there?" She asked quietly, replacing the quill and paper in her pocket.
"Right after you left your dorm, I followed you. I didn't want you to do anything stupid." A deep voice rumbled from behind her. Toward the only entrance and exit to the Tower.
She let out a dry laugh, "Like jump off the Astronomy Tower? Really, you know me better than that. Anyways, they put a charm up so you bounce and don't get squashed, it's actually fun. You should try it." There was a ten second pause, "I know."
"I know you know." The man said, "I know too."
"Why didn't you tell me?" Her voice was strained. She started twisting her hands.
"Because I was afraid of how you'd react." His voice was even, sincere. He stood straight backed against the wall, his hands in his pockets, staring at the other side of the wall.
"That's not very Slytherin of you." Her voice was breaking, "I expected haughty arrogance."
"Slytherins are arrogant, don't mistake arroagnce for fear of loss." There was a silence again.
