Disclaimer: I do not own any of the Supernatural characters. Though if I did Ruby would have died sooner in the series.
Emma Naberrie sat on the bed stunned as she stared at the TV screen in the motel room. Some man had just murdered his mother, seven other adults, and the twenty children that his mother was teaching before killing himself. When she blinked a tear started to make its way down her cheek. She blinked again and another tear escaped. Soon she was sobbing into her hands, her body wracked with each shuddering breath that she took. At that moment Sam and Dean walked into the room carrying bags of food and arguing about the case. Without thinking, Emma flung herself at them effectively stopping the argument but also causing them to drop the food when they caught her.
"Aw Em," Dean groused as he passed her off to Sam. "You made us drop the food."
"Em," Sam asked as she soaked his shirt in her tears. "What's wrong?"
Emma couldn't speak. She just pointed wordlessly at the TV as she started to sob harder.
Confused, Sam looked toward the TV and tightened his arms around her shoulders when he saw the breaking news report. Glancing over at Dean, Sam saw that he was staring at the TV in horror as well. When Dean looked at him helplessly Sam nodded before scooping Emma, who had gone quiet but was still clinging to him, up into his arms before walking over to the beds as Dean set the food down on the table. Sam sat down on one of the beds, settling Emma in his lap as he scooted back towards the wall and Dean perched on the side of the bed still looking helpless. As the two brothers tried to comfort Emma Castiel and Gabriel appeared in the room looking solemn, a look that was odd on Gabriel's normally grinning face. The four men didn't say a word as they worked to cheer up the normally happy young woman who was the reason the two brothers fought and why the two angels stayed with them. Soon the three on the bed fell asleep with Emma in between the brothers as Castiel and Gabriel watched over them to protect them from nightmares.
A/N: My condolences go out to the families that lost loved ones in the senseless act of violence that occurred earlier today in Connecticut. My most heartfelt prayers go out especially for the families of the twenty kindergartners who were murdered this morning. When I was told what had happened I started to cry. These are twenty lives that will never grow into their potential. There is a poem from T. A. Barron's Lost Years of Merlin series that deals with the death of a child. It is called Candle. Please go read it. It is very beautiful but also very sad.
