Partial Redemption
The Dark Lord and Harry Potter rose into the air, a golden dome surrounding them. The Death Eaters circling around the dome were astonished. What could possibly have caused this strange phenomenon?
The Dark Lord cried out that they were to do nothing, so they watched and waited to see what would become of their master. Peter Pettigrew stood with the rest of them, listening as his master's wand emitted screams of pain and a song-like sound echoed from the golden dome. A duplicate of the new silver hand on his wrist emerged from the wand, followed by what looked like a head. An apparition that appeared to be some sort of solid ghost emerged, and fell to the ground. Peter realized that it was the young man he had killed earlier that night, and his stomach flipped uncomfortably as his fellows howled in shock.
More appeared. The old muggle caretaker of the Riddle house his Lord had killed that summer. Bertha Jorkins, also murdered last summer, when his Lord had tortured all useful information from her. The three circled the inside of the dome, giving words of encouragement to Harry and hissing insults and assurance of his demise to Peter's master. Then came—
James Potter.
Peter gasped in horror. He quickly turned his head, his hands, silver and flesh, both shaking. James had trusted him…No. He would not think about it. Besides, it couldn't be, it couldn't be James! And yet there he was, telling Harry that Lily would be coming along as well.
Lily Potter emerged. Lily Potter, the woman he'd spied on countless times, first for James, then for his Master. Lily Potter, who seemed to retain that incredible aura of being, of truly living, that she had had in life. Lily Potter, who was telling her son to…get back to the Portkey?
Now why the hell would she tell him that? The Cup wasn't a Portkey, or at least it was no longer. It had brought Harry and the other boy here: it was used up. The Cup couldn't help the boy. Lily should know that…she had been brilliant at Charms as a girl.
Wait. Had James just…turned his way? "Do it now." Though James had whispered the command, Peter somehow still heard. He became extremely excited. He could do it! He could just…turn it back into a Portkey again!
Transforming to a rat, Peter scurried behind a tall tombstone, apparated silently to the Cup, and whispered "Portus," concentrating hard on Hogwarts' Quidditch pitch. The Cup shined blue. Peter glanced around nervously to see if anyone had noticed. No…they were now sending curses at Harry, who seemed to have broken the strange magic that had created the transparent gold web.
Peter quickly transformed and scurried as a rat a couple of rows away from the Cup. He then turned back into a man, and jumped at Harry as he ran.
And got blasted by an Impedimenta for his trouble. But that was fine with him. He now would have been witnessed chasing after Harry, and had an excuse for not cursing him. Unless his Master chose to interrogate him, his transgression would most likely not be noticed. Peter turned once more to where the ghostly apparitions had almost completely faded.
However, he could have sworn that James and Lily Potter had looked at him and smiled before vanishing completely.
