What might well have transpired when Anubis was cast out from the system lords, and an answer to why Ra's first prime wore a Jackal-helmet. Anubis is already caught, and stands before Ra to receive his sentence. (For continuity sake, I will assume that all Ra's servants are Jaffa, not human as in the movie)
"You cannot kill me," Anubis returned coldly. "I am a god."
"And it was I who provided the body you reside in, a body you used against me." Ra's eyes glowed. "That which I bestow, I can take back. Your crimes, your deceptions, your perversions and delusions…are an offence to me, and to all our kind. You disgrace us. You are renounced. But banishment, it was deemed, is too lenient for you."
"You judge my fate?" Anubis sneered. "You do not order my comings and goings. You haven't the strength."
Ra smiled. "It is not all my doing. A meeting was held. I heard your crimes, and I heard the unanimous decision. Apophis…Cronus…Yu…Heru'er…they have suffered you long enough. Perhaps my strength is lacking…would you try to challenge them also? Cronus, I think, would welcome you to. He enjoys such diversions."
"And what would you tell my followers, were I to be removed?" Anubis frowned. "They worship me, and no other. It is I who assist them in the after-life. I am needed. Without me, no other may rule my domains. You will need me alive, to reassure."
Ra glanced at him pleasantly. "Preparations have already been made for your departure," he replied mildly, glancing at Anubis askance, then at his first prime. "Your mask."
The first prime smiled sneeringly at Anubis, and erected the Jackal headed helmet. Anubis turned to Ra in outrage. "What…is this?"
"Your…replacement." Ra moved past him, admiring the workmanship of the helmet. "Anubis, so the myth shall say, was humbled by the great god Ra…" he glanced at Anubis, almost flirtingly, "and in return for his obedience, the Sun God, in his mercy, allowed Anubis to live, in his service, that he may prove his contrition."
"You intend to replace me…with a mere jaffa?"
"You are already dead," Ra retorted with a snarl, his eyes narrowed. "I show you this, to give you ease; your legacy will live on. Henceforth, Anubis sits at the right hand of Ra. He is Ra's loyal servant. So shall it be, now, and forever."
Anubis came close to Ra, until they were mere feet away, staring at each other face to face. Anubis, stern and threatening, his eyes narrowed, his lips twisted in hate. Ra, amused, pleased, for victory was his.
Anubis snapped. He struck Ra a vicious blow. The supreme system lord recoiled with a snarl, but he had no need to give orders. His first prime lashed out with his staff weapon, once to stun Anubis, the next to trip him. Horus Guards dashed forward, their weapons pointed at the fallen system lord, as the first prime struck him again and again.
"Enough." Ra hissed, drawing near, blood dripping from a cut lip. "He will die a hundred times before I surrender him to Apophis. May my brother find as much satisfaction in this traitor as I shall."
The Horus Guards dragged the beaten Anubis away, whilst Ra peered into a mirror, scowling at his injury, and allowed his servant boys and girls to tend his wound.
