So I heard about the new Guardians of Childhood book, which is all about Jack Frost. And then there's the Inktober, where William Joyce is drawing all of these fantastic pictures of Jack and giving us snips of information about Jack's life pre-movie. From that was born this series of Drabbles, one for every day of October, and each based on both the information revealed, and the picture.
I do not own Rise of The Guardians (except on DVD) and I do not own the Guardians of Childhood (except for copies of the books).
He wakes, and there is nothing. Nothing but ice underfoot, and the silence, and the wind, and moonbeams fluttering about, racing and glinting off of soft snow that sparkles like a thousand diamonds.
He watches them, listening to their murmurs – and he can almost hear words, but not quite. Who am I? he asks them.
They hesitate, slowing for just a moment – but not quite – and do not answer. Instead, they flutter about, and then vanish into the night, leaving nought but gloom.
And the moon looks down, its face bright, with moonbeams racing to and fro. And the moon whispers. A name, that isn't really a name. Jack frost. It tells him.
The name doesn't fit. He knows that. But when he tries to find which name does, no name springs to mind. Because there is nothing, nothing but ice and Frost.
Why am I being here? He asks. And the moonbeams have no answer. And the moon… The moon tries to speak, but there is so much pain! So much hurt! And Jack knows, that it is a question that the moon should not, cannot answer.
Jack will forget the pain, and the hurt. And he will ask again. And the moon will never answer, because there is too much pain there.
He climbs into the crook of a tree, and falls asleep there, cradled by moon as best it can. And the moon shines down, like the biggest, brightest Nightlight.
But Jack is already fast asleep, dreaming empty dreams.
I'll try not to put any obvious spoilers in the text, but I will hide little hints for clever readers. The only exceptions to this will be if William Joyce posts a picture with obvious spoilers.
This drabble is based on the scene where Jack has woken up in the movie (but before he goes to the village), the synopsis for the new book, and the picture for Day 1.
For all fans not yet in the know - the book comes out on the 27th, and the synopsis holds some pretty big spoilers. Careful when reading those spoilers, because once you do? Everything that you think you know, will change.
Good Luck!
