She couldn't believe it. The little rat thought it all meant something. But she had ten times more power than he, ten times the strength, and ten times the stone in her heart. No, he would never do. It wasn't Rodolphus she was concerned with, he wouldn't care. It was the weakling, offering his love like a gift. Love. She didn't need it. Didn't want it.
And yet the ugly, short man was begging her, pleading. Telling her he loved him. He was not supposed to love her. And if one time was all it took to sway him, she had no need for him. No need for a show of weakness, no need for those words.
"Please," he begged, "I love you."
"You don't have it in you to love," she spat, her eyes alive with the fury of death.
"I promise, I do. I love you, please. Please don't-"
"Don't what?" Her voice cracked through the empty air of the entry hall, and he shrank even closer to the floor, ducking from her blow. She was angry now; he seemed to think she wanted his love. "Hurt you?" she asked, suddenly quiet and dangerous. "Torture you? Kill you? Cause you heartache?"
"Please, I just want-"
"Do I care what you want?"
"If you love me-"
"But I do not."
He started sobbing at this, and she glared at him. He was showing his weakness, and she didn't have the patience to wait. Her wand was turned on him in a heartbeat, her breath sharp and fast against the cold air.
"Please," he begged, trying for the last time, "I love you! I promise I-"
"Crucio," she whispered, and watched as he withered with the pain of it. There, she thought triumphantly. That was love. Nothing more than something to cause pain. The curse of a weaker heart, of a soul whole and untarnished. That would teach him never to love her again. Never to love anyone again. Loyalties must lie somewhere, but love could be pushed aside.
