Mako took a deep breath before going into her room.

Asami's room.

He went inside, and no one was there. Her makeup was organized atop her dresser, and her bed was neatly made. It was like no one had ever slept in the room, like it was just there for show.

Perhaps she was washing the dishes. Or maybe off onto the other areas of Air Temple Island. But he knew she was avoiding him.

"Why don't you sit in the back seat? With Korra."

She had spoken her name in the harshest tone that had ever come out of her sweet mouth. Her dull green eyes that once were gleaming and smiling to him simply glared at him then, and whenever they made any eye contact at all. She remained uninterested and cold towards him. He would simply look away, ashamed by his inability to have been honest with her. But then Korra, she would glance at him with her happy blue eyes and he would warm up.

He wanted to fix things.

Asami was in the kitchen, helping Pema. Now that Rohan was birthed, she was a lot more tired.

"Oh, I hope he's a nonbender like me." She would always say with an exasperated sigh, a slight smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. She would then proceed to kiss little Rohan on his forehead.

Asami's sharp tone broke the silence.

"What do you want Mako?"

She didn't take her eyes away from the dishes, and Pema noted the atmosphere. She quickly scooped Rohan up and exited. Mako stepped forward. She closed the sink and put the clean dish onto the counter.

"I want to fix this."

"Fix what?"

She turned around, eyes glaring like always.

"Us."

"There's no 'us' to fix Mako. You should have been honest with me from the beginning. But now, there is no 'us'. There is nothing between us. You made it clear that you like Korra over me. And that I was just a pretty girl."

"I was wrong. I do like Korra, but I think that…I like you more."

"That's why you kissed her. That's why, you left me for her. That's why you care more about her than me. I like Korra. She's a great girl. But you're not a very great guy."

Mako leaned towards Asami, and hesitated. Asami's heart beat with anticipation. No, I can't do this to Korra. He kissed her gently, and Asami closed her eyes. She shoved Mako away.

"No, get away from me Mako. I don't want this."

Oh, but how she wished it were real.

"But why?"

"A kiss isn't going to fix anything. Go off and hang out with your new girlfriend. I don't want her to get the same person I did."

She looked away, a tear running down her cheek, and wiping it away she frowned. She turned on the faucet, and things were the same.

"I'm…I'm sorry."

He reached out to her, but he put it down and let the emptiness somehow fill what could have been. He stepped out of the unfinished and stepped into something new.
