"You have to be willing to write badly."

-Monica Wood

It was never easy being in love with Blair Waldorf. Blair being Blair alone made it hard. She was neurotic, and jealous, and occasionally wicked. Okay, so more than just occasionally. More like all the time. The thing was, when she really wanted to she could be so caring and sweet and loyal it was worth it. And she was always beautiful, so sometimes she hooked you on that alone before you knew about the other half.

Except she didn't want to be those things for him, not anymore. He'd had her, mind, body and soul all ready and willing. And he'd broken her heart. She didn't seem to have forgotten that, even if she might have tried. Maybe if he'd only done it once, but he'd made it crack twice. Maybe more he hadn't realized. He had loved her, in fact, he loved her more than anyone. He'd needed to breathe to figure it out though. Not everyone, like her could figure it out when they were practically babies. He probably could have figured it out without sleeping with her best friend…but still.

He had an apartment key in his pocket. One he really wanted her to have. Except he'd just told her she shouldn't have it, or she'd told him she wouldn't take it. And they both knew why. They wouldn't say it, they wouldn't even write it down. It was practically screaming a wedge between them anyways. Chuck Bass.

Just the stupid raspy way he said it when he introduced himself to anyone. His stupid scarf wrapped around his neck. Sometimes Nate wanted to strangle him with that scarf.

He wouldn't though. He was nice. And he'd be nice when Blair and Chuck finally decided to get it on again by getting him out of Blair's life once more. He'd be nice enough to get back together with Vanessa, or maybe he'd end up with little Jenny Humphrey again. He'd smile because with a name like Archibald his picture would be sure to end up in the society pages. And when it did, Blair Waldorf would see it while looking for herself. And when she did, he wanted her to think, Wow, look what I gave up.

AN: So this is my first Gossip Girl story. I'm kind of getting my feel for it still. I want to write Blair, but I also want to do her justice when I do. So I started with Nate, because it seemed the easiest except maybe Serena and I'm not a huge fan of her.

Prompt No. 2: Imagine a coat. Imagine the pocket of that coat. Write about what's inside the pocket.
