Digimon song, Yu-Gi-Oh fanfic. Interesting combination, eh?
It was fitting, though. You'll see why.

If I was a bird then I'd be free,
Free to leave this misery.
Five thousand years. For five thousand years he had slept, waiting. For the right day, the right person...the right time.
He never truly regretted the choice he made...but there were more than a few bitter dreams about his lost past. Why me? he asked himself harshly at times. Why am I here? Why couldn't it have been someone else?
He always chided himself after thoughts like these, for he would never wish his predicament on anyone...no one in the world.

Escape a world that cannot see,
that all that's empty lies in me.
To try again and start anew,
And make the change to help me through.
His heart, his soul itself had been empty and void of all emotion until the Puzzle's owner and his friends had worked their way into Yami's soul...in a most positive way. It felt familiar...when they laughed with him, a warm light ignited in him. This has happened to me before...
Perhaps it was the right thing...to start again. Something in his heart told him that these new friends of his would fill the emptiness in his heart...and his past.

Silence set within my soul,
Nothing left, nothing left to make me whole.
A shadow cannot exist without light. It is a law, a hard fact of nature.
It was a fact of nature that he could not survive, could not live, could not win without Yuugi.
Darkness cannot be complete without the light. He was not complete without Yuugi.

As the rain begins to fall,
Casting shadows on the wall.
I close my eyes and dare the thunder,
to break the spell that I've been under.
Even the sky cries for me, Yami thought bitterly as he listened to the downpour outside the cramped tent. For the curse that has been put on me, for the blood on my hands.
He could still feel the madness of the Orichalcos seal coursing through his mind and dangerously close to his heart, already torn in two as Yuugi's soul was ripped from his body.

Makes me wanna fly away,
No reasons left to make me stay.
To quit before I even start,
to leave this darkness in my heart.
He must defeat it himself, this black void in the depths of his heart. It was the only way. If it stayed...who knew what tortures he himself would bring upon his friends?
But...so hard...
If only this burden had not been left on him. If only he could just leave this circle of madness...if only...if only...
Aibou, Yuugi said sternly from inside the Millennium Puzzle. If you're going to live your life asking 'Why?', then why don't you make more of an effort to figure out why?
Had it not been asked in a teasing, gentle, caring tone, Yami would have thought Yugi to be under the seal of the Orichalcos.
No...I'll never let that happen. Yami clenched his fists and watched the blood slowly seep out from underneath his fingernails. Never again.

Now that I know that you're around,
I'll slip away without a sound.
As the spirit door opened...to the next world, to his final resting place...he did not look back at his friends until they themselves called his name. For he knew that Yuugi, his soulmate for the rest of eternity, would take care of them, make sure that everything and everyone was happy. He would fill them with his inner light that shone like the hot desert sun...just as he had done for Atem.
