On nights like this, they could see every star as far as the sky would stretch. Endlessly twinkling, gazing down at the earth like a million pairs of eyes. The perfect night to simply lay on the grass and think.
"Makes you feel kinda small, doesn't it?" Lex sighed. Azel blinked, propping himself up on an elbow.
"What do you mean?"
"The sky. All these stars. Hell, even all this grass," Lex said, sitting up and stretching a bit. "Doesn't it remind you of how we're just little specks of nothing compared to it all?"
Azel snorted.
"That's a heavy thought for such a beautiful night. You feeling okay?" he asked, reaching over as if to feel Lex's forehead. Lex playfully swatted his friend's hand away.
"Come on, don't tell me you aint thinking it either."
"Actually, no. Sometimes I do, but not on nights like this," Azel said. "Look at it, Lex...when was the last time the sky was so clear, or the night was this warm?" He smiled. "Or when we had time to just relax and be ourselves instead of going to all those boring meetings and studying for exams?"
Lex grinned.
"Why Azel of Velthomer, I don't believe I've ever heard you talk like that! It's about time you wised up to how boring all that crap is."
"It's just nice to have a break," Azel said, rather pointedly. "Your influence on me still isn't that strong."
"Sure it aint." Lex laughed, then his eye suddenly caught movement. "Hey, Azel, look!" Azel's eyes shot towards where his friend was pointing.
"Oh...oh, is that what I think it is?" he gasped. "It is! A shooting star!"
"Damn." Lex laughed. "Don't that beat all. I hear shooting stars only happen once every few hundred years if we're lucky."
"And just think, it happened right here in the courtyards of House Dozel," Azel sighed dreamily. Lex rolled his eyes, but he was smiling as he leaned closer to Azel, neither of them saying another word as they continued to witness the natural wonder before them.
