Mum's the Word!

Chapter One

Sonic, You're Not in Safe Hands

"You want me to do what?"

When Shadow had grumpily pulled open the door of his flat, he had not expected this. He'd thought it might have been Rouge, who often frequented his apartment, or maybe even Omega. Not Miles 'Tails' Prower.

If that wasn't bad enough, Tails had brought Faker with him. But he looked a little different, this time.

The twin-tailed fox gave Shadow a pleading look, "Please, Shadow! I need your help! Sonic needs your help! It's only until I can locate Eggman! I know that you're not exactly a parent—"

"No kidding," Shadow huffed.

"But it can't be that hard," Tails stared up at him, as if he were asking for the easiest thing in the world. The Ultimate Life Form growled.

"Why don't you do it, then?"

"Because I'm trying to find Eggman. He's the one responsible. He's the only one who can fix this," Tails sniffed his best friend, who was cradled in the fox's arms, "And... it smells like someone needs changing."

Tails dumped Sonic in Shadow's arms, twirling his tails and flying off, before Shadow could even protest, "I'll keep you posted! You'll be fine, Shadow!"

The ebony hedgehog sighed, frustrated. He stepped back into his house, slamming the door behind him. In response, the tiny blue hedgehog cub began to cry.

"Dammit. Don't cry. I can't do anything. Faker..." Shadow shook the cub slightly, hoping that he would quieten down. He simply screamed harder.

Shadow peered down at Sonic, finally taking a proper look at him. Even he had to admit, Sonic looked rather sweet. He still had his jade green eyes and piercing blue quills, but he was a lot smaller and a lot louder. Shadow could imagine that Amy Rose would fall over at the adorableness. As if on cue, the blue cub wriggled in his white blanket, before starting to cry again.

"Are you hungry?" Shadow set the blue hedgehog down on his couch, before racing towards the kitchen. When he returned, he was holding a small piece of chocolate.

"Everyone loves chocolate," He muttered, handing the piece to Sonic. The baby hedgehog looked at the melting square, before he turned his nose up at it and threw it at Shadow, "Except you, apparently. So what do you like?"

For whatever reason, Sonic had stopped screaming. Shadow took a seat beside him, lightly making the cushions bounce. Baby Sonic giggled, cutely.

"I never thought I'd say this, but you're not any less annoying as a baby," Shadow glared at the cub, who simply titled his head to one side. Sonic made quiet gurgling sounds.

The Ultimate Life Form breathed in, starting to relax a bit more, but he immediately tensed up when he smelt a horrific odour from Sonic.

"What the—?!" Shadow wafted the air in front of him. He glanced disdainfully at the blue cub, "No. That will not be happening."

Shadow let out a heavy sigh, as he moved over to his mobile phone and began to scroll through the contacts. He tilted his head at a few of them, pondering, until he finally reached one which seemed adequate. There was no way that he was doing this on his own.

The dialling tone rang in his ear. Much to Shadow's relief, a voice quickly came through on the other side of the line.

"Shadow?"

"Get over here. Now."

"W-What? Shadow? What's going on?"

"Silver, I haven't got time for this. Get over here. It's an emergency."

"Okay, okay! Calm down. I'll be there in as soon as I can," Silver hung up, with an understandably confused tone in his voice. Dumping his phone on the side, Shadow groaned and sat down next to Sonic, who was giggling. He rolled his eyes.

"At least you have something to laugh about. When you return to normal, you're extremely dead, Faker," Shadow might have been starting to develop a soft spot for Baby Sonic, but he would still continue to call him Faker. After all, this was still Sonic the Hedgehog. Even if he was in diapers.

"Alright, Shadow, tell me what's going on. Why did you—?"

Open-mouthed, Silver stared at Shadow and Sonic. The Ultimate Life Form was rocking the cub in his arms, but he had carefully positioned the Blue Blur, so that he wasn't holding the nappy-clad end. It was an image that Silver the Hedgehog had never thought he'd see.

"Take your time. It's only taken me half an hour to stop him from screaming," Shadow snapped.

"What the—?! What is happening?!"

"You'll find it hard to believe. I'll explain after you've changed Faker," Shadow tossed the baby towards Silver, not seeming concerned that the time traveller was too far away to catch him. Silver let out a yelp and just managed to catch Sonic with his powers. The cobalt cub laughed, gleefully, unaware of the danger that he had faced.

Silver was on the verge of a breakdown, "WHAT IS GOING ON?!"

"Calm down. You've just got to change him," Shadow felt a lot calmer himself, now that Sonic was in someone else's hands.

"Shadow, you could have killed him! You don't throw babies! I'd have thought that went without saying! But that's besides the point — what has happened to Sonic the Hedgehog?!"

The ebony hedgehog rolled his eyes, "Change him. Then I'll tell you."

"I'm not changing him!" Silver defiantly folded his arms, as Sonic floated in mid-air, with a teal glow surrounding him.

"Then Sonic's transformation will forever be a mystery to you."

With a dark glare, Silver swept Sonic into his arms and disappeared through the doorway. Then there was the slam of the bathroom door.

Shadow smirked, "He always was too curious."

"Here. You can have this," Silver tossed the dirty nappy towards Shadow, who grimaced when he caught it, before aiming his throw at the bin.

"Thank you," He said, sarcastically.

Silver collapsed onto the couch, next to Shadow, with a tired sigh. Then, once he'd recovered, he turned and crossed his arms, "Sonic is asleep in your room. So explain."

"Tails knocked on my door, dumped the baby on me, and said he had to find Eggman to reverse this. He didn't say much else. He left that, too," Shadow kicked his hoverskate in the direction of a blue satchel, discarded on the floor. Silver leant forward, picked up the bag, and pulled out a couple of nappies, a bottle of lukewarm milk and a blanket.

"This is all he left? And I changed Sonic's diaper for that information?" Silver dropped the bag back on the floor, before getting up to leave, "I'm off. You're on your own, Shadow."

But he was stopped, when Shadow darted up and grabbed the grey hedgehog's wrist, "Stop, Silver. You have to help me."

"Why should I?" A smile found its way onto Silver's mouth. Shadow sighed, knowing that he would regret whatever the exchange would be.

"I'll give you a thousand rings."

"No way."

"Five thousand."

"You cheapskate."

"A Chaos Emerald, then," Shadow grumbled, entirely desperate.

Silver considered this more practically. A Chaos Emerald was always a handy item to have, even if the situation didn't demand it at the time. He wasn't heading back to the future yet — Blaze had agreed that some time off would be good for him — but having a Chaos Emerald now would free up some time searching for it later. Anyway, he didn't have much else to do.

"Alright. You've got yourself a deal," Silver grinned, sticking out his hand and shaking Shadow's.

The Ultimate Life Form didn't look impressed, but he agreed, "You're not getting it until Tails has changed him back. What do we do first?"

"We need to go out and buy baby stuff. We can't do anything with this rubbish," Silver gestured down at the satchel that Tails had brought over.

"I don't imagine that Tails was prepared for the situation when he put the bag together," Dryly, Shadow raised an eyebrow and looked at him, "How do you know what we need?"

"I'm full of surprises! I've got a unique skillset, you know."

"But of course. Let's go, then," He strode past Silver, heading towards his bedroom, where he would find the blue hedgehog peacefully slumbering, "Wait here. You'd better be right about this."

"I am. Come on, Shadow, you'll love it. Maybe maternity will soften up that gruff exterior of yours."

Shadow highly doubted that.
