Mako and Bolin were nothing but street orphans after their parents died when they were very young they had nothing but each other and that was enough for them.

In the years that followed Mako took care of his brother, stealing food for him even though it wasn't enough for him, finding him cloth to sleep in to keep him warm whilst he shivered through the night Bolin was lucky to have Mako.

Mako and Bolin had got lucky they became a small time bending team with the addition of a friend, Hasook, they weren't the best but they were just good enough to hold their own and get a few bob in the process. That was their lives; they would get up and eat then train then eat the fight the sleep and repeat the process each day. Their team name was "The fire ferrets" Bolin's own idea that was his favourite animal ever since he was four years of age his parents had taken him to a zoo an shown him all kinds of animals even a polar bear dog. But Bolin was only really interested in the fire ferret it was bright orange, sleek and cute too he wanted one so badly but he knew he could never have one. They were endangered.

"Mako I am fed up doing the same old thing over and over again," Bolin was sulking he wanted something to happen anything but it was highly unlikely that anything was but not impossible.

A fire ferret scurried into the room and cautiously made its way to Mako it tugged on his trouser leg as it was kicked away by Mako tumbling backwards until Bolin caught it.

"Hey careful bro there endangered."

"We were the same once and everyone kicked us," Mako said harshly.

"Well we still could have benefited from help maybe you would have got an actual meal and stopped shivering in the cold your chattering teeth kept me awake," Bolin replied.

Mako smiled at him, he was right they could have used the help but it never came, why would it? To get anything in life they had to earn it, they had to work Mako even learnt how to bend lightning just to work in the factories for extra cash. But they way his brother looked at this creature, this ferret he had made a connection and a strong one he could feel it. It was just like them at one point it was homeless, it probably had no family and it was probably hungry. Bolin broke off a piece of bread from the cupboards and fed the small ferret it chewed in small bits quickly but taking small enough bites for the food to be consumed slowly. They had to keep him.

"Can we keep him?" Bolin pleaded.

"Of course he is family now," Mako smiled at them both as his younger brother smiled back up at him.

"What do we call him?"

Pabu entered the room, he was an old time pro bender he watched as the game was created he retired undefeated he had a lean body but a kind face and a toothy grin, he liked to laugh and he was good at making others laugh if this fire ferret was going to be named after anybody it would have to be him.

"Pabu…"
