Author's Note: This drabble was inspired by the 4-18-2012 following lyrics from BonesBird's Facebook Fanfiction Drabble Challenge:
No one in your life is with you constantly
No one is completely on your side
And though I move my world to be with him
Still what got between us is too wideA Love Superior
A Love Superior
She missed him.
Although, she had fallen out of love with him months ago, she actually did miss him.
She missed the camaraderie they had shared.
She wanted that friendship back, but knew it would be a cruel request.
She knew the pain of being close friends with the person who you were in love with.
She wished that pain on no one, not even psycho UnSubs.
She was in constant, secret pain for seven years, while she was best friends with Derek Morgan, and she wished no one that sort of pain. It was heartbreaking and at time it had felt immobilizing.
Shortly before her break up with Kevin, she had analyzed their relationship and she realized that it had been more friends with benefits than what it should have been. They had not been on a date for almost a year before the break up and even longer since, they had had a deep discussion. Regardless of what their relationship had morphed into over the years, it could have continued to work. She could have hell she had, committed to that life-long relationship, while she held onto her deepest darkest fantasy of Derek Morgan. She had settled for Kevin Lynch.
Yet, ever so often, events occur in life that make one reevaluate what one wants and needs.
That event for her was the case of the reemergence of Cindy Morgan, Derek's missing cousin.
The pain that she had endured during the years of loving her best friend from afar was nothing compared to the pain that she felt when she heard Derek on the phone talking about the case, and after she accused him of not focusing on the case. She had felt so guilty she had immediately book a plane ticket to on a commercial flight to Chicago. Derek needed her and she needed to apologize to him and be there for him as a best friend, no matter how much she knew it would hurt to be only the best friend.
Yet, after she arrived in Chicago, found Derek, and comforted him with her presence and friendly movie night, she was pleasantly surprised and shocked when Derek declared his true feelings to her. He had insured that there were no doubts about his intentions. He had realized that after everything they and the team had gone through over the years, paired with the emotions and thoughts created from Cindy's situation, that life was entirely too precious to yearn after something you could not have without trying to claim it.
She could have stayed content with her quasi-relatioship with Kevin, but Derek Morgan was in love with her just as much as she was in love with Derek Morgan, and that would forever be superior than any feeling she had ever shared with Kevin Lynch.
