Chapter I
The Great Souls
The old demon bellowed with rage, the sound echoing across the mountains from atop the snowy peak. It attempted to bring its giant hammer down upon the insignificant human who stood before it. Vendrick leaped aside, and drove his sword into the monster's hide yet again. The demon, who had subjugated and terrorized the surrounding land and all its inhabitants, was overwhelmed with fury at this tiny human who had wounded it so severely.
The demon knew that the human was not simply fighting it for sport. He was after the soul that the demon had found long ago. It was a soul that had once brought light, and its original bearer had been lost to history. The demon, desperate to hold on to its soul, flailed wildly, but Vendrick was too fast and too strong. With a final thrust from Vendrick's sword, the hulking demon collapsed upon the mountaintop.
Standing triumphantly over the demon's corpse, the warrior raised his hand, and the soul of light rose up from the dead carcass. It coalesced in his hand, dancing and glowing warmly like a small fire. He held up his other hand, and produced three other souls that he had taken from powerful creatures that he had slain. They shimmered brightly, and Vendrick knew that he now held in his hands the greatest power attainable by any human, granted to him by the four souls that he had claimed.
Vendrick started to make his way down from the peak of the mountain. All around him was a vast land of isolated peoples who had long been mired in stagnancy, with no hopes of progress, or of achieving greatness. With the four souls, Vendrick intended to help elevate the peoples of the forsaken land to the highest glory.
Author's note: This is a very short chapter, and I'm sorry for that. I haven't written anything in a long time, and I'm kinda rusty. There should be more going on in the following chapters.
In Dark Souls 2, Chancellor Wellager says that the king defeated the four great ones, and built the kingdom upon their souls. I don't think that the four great ones he's referring to are the ones we fight in the game. I think that they're just creatures who have come into possession of the great souls which belonged to Gwyn, Nito, the witch, and Seath, and those souls have had a number of owners over the ages.
