Chapter one
I sat at my kitchen table, finishing my breakfast; two sunny-side up eggs, toast with no crust, and a glass of strawberry juice. I love strawberry juice. I made it myself with some delicious fresh berries. I also hate crust. It is so hard and crunchy, in a bad way.
Once I am done eating, I get in my car. Time for work. Just another normal, human day. Ha! As if I'm normal, or even human. Well, half human. And half Draki. I am pretty badass.
No one knows this of course. I can't let them. It's my kinds' most guarded secret. If anyone found out, we could be killed of very quickly. No one wants that much blood on their shoulders.
If only I was like Jacinda, my best friend, who can be who she is with a human. And an ex-hunter at that. I shiver at the thought of hunters. The horrid people that hunt us, for money!
" I want to-"
"-No! No! my turn! I-"
"-You jerk! I was-"
"- Come on!"
" –I win! I win!-"
Kids scream and splash. They are so loud. I love my job, but I can't take the chaos. My head is throbbing. I need to get some air. Oh my god, I think I'm going to pass out.
I wake up in a strange place. I realize it's a doctor's office. Crap! Doctors! Oh no, this is bad!
"Hello, it looks like you are awake," A man, walks into the room.
"who are you?" I ask.
"Dr. Freeman."
Oh, as if that explains everything! now i totally know who the hell he is!
" Um, can i go home now?" I practically whine.
"Well, that depends..." He trailed off.
" Depends on what?" I pester.
"We need to make sure you don't have a concussion."
"Is that all? Because I don't. So can I leave already?"
"Well," He looked very uncomfortable." You see -"
He seemed to not know what to say.
" Listen, Dr. Freeman, I am going to go home. I do not have a concussion. And I am Unwilling to pay this bill. So unless it is free, I'll be going." I stood up, and started walking to the door. "You cannot hold me hear, it's a free country. Bye! And thanks for nothing."
I walked right out of the offices, immediately feeling guilty. I was really bitchy to that man who just wanted to help. Too bad he was such an idiot. I walked to the nearest bus stop, and rode to my house. IT was a relief to see my home. My only haven in this world. The pride used to be my home. But since the hunters came, and a lot of people died. I shudder at the thought. Also Jacinda left, so I didn't really have anyone to talk with. I just kind of skipped my tour. This is my life now. I chose it.
