"We'll figure it out. We're us."
The words still ring in my ears. These were the words Peter spoke to me as we stood awkwardly on the curb outside of my UNC dorm room. Dad, Trina, Kitty, and Margot had left over an hour ago, but Peter had drove separately so he could drive straight back to UVA. He had been moved in for weeks already since his lacrosse games had already started. Practices and conditioning and team activities had kept him so busy that I hardly saw him since coming back from Korea. Now, all those wasted hours hung between us as we held onto every second.
Peter ran his hands through his hair and the look on his face made my heart break into a million pieces.
"I love you, Lara Jean. Always and forever."
I scoop him into my arms and hold on tighter than I ever had before, hoping that this would be enough of an answer for him. I could no longer speak, due to the giant lump in my throat.
We kissed there on the curb, oblivious to the other freshman milling around us with duffel bags and carefully packed boxes of cheap dorm décor.
"Dammit" Peter breathes, and I hear a catch in his throat as well.
We are frozen, neither of us wanting to be the first to break away, but both knowing it is inevitable.
"I'll see you in 2 weeks." I finally say. Peter has a home game Labor Day Weekend that I will come home for.
"And then 5 weeks after that I will come visit for Columbus Day Weekend."
"Right! And then before you know it, it'll be Thanksgiving, and then we have a whole month for December." I bury my head in the crook of his neck. "We have a plan. We won't go more than a month without seeing each other."
"An addendum." Peter looks down at me with a small smile on his lips. "…To our contract."
