Austria bolted upward, small hands tightly grasping his blanket as another clap of thunder interrupted his sleep. It had been the third time in one night and Roderich was getting fed up. He hated thunder storms, he could never sleep through them. If a nightmare didn't wake him up the loud booming thunder outside did.
The young Austrian hopped off his bed and toddled out the door and down the hallway. Tired as he was, there was no way he was going to get to sleep tonight at this rate...
He slowly pushed the door open and tip-toed over to his friend's bed. Switzerland was sleeping peacefully, his normal irritated demeanor replaced with a calm, relaxed expression.
"...Vash?" Roderich whispered, after hesitating for a moment. The Swiss boy stirred slightly but quickly fell back into his steady breathing pattern. Austria, not wanting to spend yet another sleepless night alone, tried again.
"Vash, please wake up..." Roderich whispered again, a little louder this time. He lightly shook his friend's shoulder causing the still-sleepy Swiss to yawn and open his eyes a bit.
He stared at the boy standing at his bedside for a second through half-lidded green eyes. After realizing it was just his Austrian partner he let out and irritated groan. "What is it Roderich..." he mumbled, voice heavy with sleep.
"Vash, can I sleep with you?"
There was an odd silence as Switzerland processed what the other boy had just said. "N-no!" He stammered, face turning red as he abruptly sat up. "Just go back to bed already!"
Austria's face fell. "But Vash... I don't like the thunder and lightning outside, I can't sleep.", he whined softly, "A-and it's cold and dark in my room and I'm lonely and I keep having nightmares. Please?"
The Swiss boy narrowed his eyes and pointed at the door with his index finger. "No. I said it and I meant it. Go back to bed." he replied coldly.
Austria met his gaze with sad, violet eyes. "P-please? Just once? Pleeeease?" he whimpered shakily. He looked as if he was about to start sobbing if Vash said no again. Even in the dark, Switzerland could make out the tears welling up in his eyes. His entire figure was trembling- Either he was trying not to cry or he really was cold.
No doubt about it, Vash had never seen anyone look that pitiful.
"Fine." He mumbled flatly, turning his back on Roderich. The young Austrian dived under the covers on the other side of the bed. Switzerland sighed, wondering if he'd ever grow up.
Switzerland soon fell back asleep, leaving Austria awake next to him, eyes closed tightly wishing the night would just end already. He'd begun shaking again, but he kept his distance from Vash, not wanting to wake him up again and make him angry.
He noticed the other boy shift in his sleep, but didn't think anything of it until he had an arm slung over his torso, pulling him closer.
Roderich opened his eyes and stared disbelievingly at the Swiss boy next to him for a moment before smiling and relaxing. Vash must've been cold too, but he never tells anyone anything.
The Austrian slung his arm around Switzerland and closed his eyes. "We're gonna stay friends forever, right Vash?" He whispered.
"...Mmhmm..." Was the muffled response.
Although Austria couldn't help but laugh at Switzerland the next morning when the blonde realized Roderich was in his bed, screamed, and promptly fell onto the floor. Yes, the young Austrian was chased around the house that morning until Switzerland finally gave up.
Friends forever, he thought.
