"It is not our abilities that show what we truly are. It is our choices." Professor Dumbledore
When the new tributes come down to dinner, he's already on his way to being drunk. Effie surveys him with disdain and the tributes look at him cautiously, probably already accepting their deaths.
He studies them. The girl looks tough- she has a hard look about her, callused hands, and a glint in her grey eyes that shows she's lived through life in the Seam and she knows how to survive. The boy has been crying. He's probably around thirteen- Haymitch hadn't paid much attention to who was called. He also has a Seam look around him, but he's thinner and more scared and Haymitch assumes he probably has an older brother or a father who does most of the work. His eyes dart about wildly.
Quickly and almost painlessly, he makes his decision. Just one look at the girl shows that there's a better chance of her surviving than the boy- although the chance of her surviving is still slim.
They sit down at the table and the boy looks at him. Haymitch wonders if he knows he's been condemned to his death.
There can only ever be one winner.
just a short little drabble about Haymitch. This obviously takes place before Katniss and Peeta, probably a few years. you figure it's gotta suck, having to choose who you're gonna try to keep alive each year.
and yes, I KNOW I quoted a fictional character at the top. But he is a WISE fictional character.
