"What's this?" asked Teddy, as his godfather slipped the envelope into his hand.
"It's from your parents," Harry told him. The boy frowned in confusion.
"What do you mean, Harry? They're–"
"I know," Harry assured him. "But your Dad gave this to me before he died. He wanted you to have it, Teddy."
"What does it say?" asked Teddy uncertainly. Harry shrugged.
"I haven't read it. It's addressed to you."
Teddy turned over the envelope, where his father's writing curled on the parchment.
To Teddy Remus Lupin
The train whistle blew. "Quickly, onto the train, Teddy," urged Harry. "You can read it there." Teddy gave his godfather a crushing hug, and leapt onto the train, where his trunk was already stored in an empty compartment. He leant out the window as the train began to move, waving, until the platform was out of sight. Then, he sat down in the compartment, sliding the door shut behind him, and sitting down on one of the seats.
With trembling hands, he slid the letter out of the envelope, unfolded it, and started to read.
Dear Teddy,
If Harry does as he has promised, then this letter should be reaching you sometime after your 11th birthday, and both your mother and I died in the Battle of Hogwarts. Know that we fought willingly in the hope of a better future, where you could grow up a free man. And know that we will always love you.
You will be able to grow up safe and happy surrounded by your family and friends. Andromeda, Harry and the Weasley's have all promised to protect and care for you, should anything happen to Dora and I tonight. I am at peace knowing that you are in safe hands.
Harry is more like than you than either of you think. He, too, grew up without parents, in the care of relatives. But you will be so much luckier than him. You will be surrounded by family and friends who love you.
Hopefully, by now, your Hogwarts letter has come, and I expect Harry will have taken you out to buy your school things. I know you will love Hogwarts. I would tell you to keep out of trouble, but going by your parents record, not to mention Harry's, I think it would be a lost cause. So here's my advice - have fun, and make friends.
Believe in yourself, Teddy, I know you'll make us proud.
Love,
Remus John Lupin
(Dad)
And
Nymphadora Tonks
(Mum)
