'Thank you Mello' Near thought to himself. 'If it wasn't for you I would have lost.' Kira had been killed by his own shinigami. Going truly insane once he knew he lost.
Near accepted that he never would have won if it wasn't for Mello's hasty and not planned out moves. After he kidnapped that annoying reporter that was working with Kira, one of his huge supporters, the SPK noticed Teru Mikami doing something strange. For someone who has things very organized, and his days planned out, it was very strange for him to break that pattern and go to the bank for the second day in a row.
So when Near had Gevanni inspect his sudden change in schedule, they found a death note in his handwriting. Causing Near to come up with a plan to capture Kira and Mikami in the act of using the death notes, thus confirming his suspicions.
Near had sent flowers to Mello's grave as a thank-you, for helping him come up with a way to capture the Kira's in the act.
Near had Gevanni make an exact copy of the death note, down to the smallest details. Then they made the switch hiding the real death note in the SPK building. Then it was time to set a meeting with Mr. Light Yagami
Light agreed, thinking that he had now won. That he would now take out the only people who might be able to stop him. He didn't expect how clever Near truly is. Failing to even guess that the death note was replaced by a fake.
When he found out about the fake it was too late, he had already confessed to being Kira, declaring victory. That led to his death, he began to panic as Near explained how he won the well plotted game that led to Light's demise.
Light panicked, revealing a hidden piece of the death note, Matsuda shot him. Leaving him defenseless and begging for someone to help him. When it was over, his shinigami wrote two words into the death note he carried at his side 'Light Yagami' ending Light's life in 30 seconds.
'We never would have won, if it wasn't for you Mello.' Near thought, thinking of L and Mello, finally happy that after all those years, the game had finally ended.
